Hi Sangeeta, thanks for agreeing to share your experience with Authory so far. Please tell us a little bit about your background as a journalist.

I started in journalism in 2016 in Seattle. I was a junior reporter for an online local news site called Crosscut, where I covered politics. I moved to New York as an intern for Quartz (the business/finance offshoot of The Atlantic.) I was there for 2 years, first on breaking news, then on business, and finally, as a reporter covering culture, fashion, and beauty.

I left Quartz in Sept 2019. Since then, I’ve been the senior writer for culture at The Cut and New York Magazine.

You have been using Authory for a few months now. What did you look for initially?

I needed a place to store my articles safely in case the website they were originally published on folded. I’d been meaning to do this for a while, but it became a priority during the pandemic when lots of media sites started to shutter.

And how has Authory worked for you? Have your expectations been fulfilled?

As you can see, literally all of my work has been published online (I think I’ve had two articles go to print, but even they live primarily on the internet.) This is true for the majority of journalists, especially young ones! Our work is our career, and that needs to be protected. How else will we continue to build a portfolio?

Our work is our career, and that needs to be protected. Authory was an elegant solution for this concern.

For me, Authory was an elegant solution for this concern; I don’t have to worry about manually inputting new articles, because it does that; I don’t have to worry about backing up anything, because it does that.

What’s more, it’s a great place to point people to if they want to see the breadth of my work. All in all, it’s exceeded expectations.

Anybody taking a look at your Authory page can easily see that you’ve covered a wide variety of topics, ranging from culture/art to fashion/beauty and celebrity profiles. In addition, you’ve done beautiful illustration work in the past, too. What’s your experience with wearing different hats as a writer?

I think as a young writer you’re expected to have a certain nimbleness. This can be difficult because it often means stretching yourself rather thin to demonstrate that you have the skills and abilities to cover certain beat areas.

Unfortunately, if you went the traditional route that I did (intern, editorial assistant, writer) you will be wearing different hats in order to prove to the people who promote you that you can wear them.

That said, I found that it was mostly a good thing to get experience in different reporting modes, both to improve on your craft and see what you like. It’s also valuable from an employer perspective; your business reporting experience may give you an edge at a fashion job one day, and vice versa.

What would you say to your journalist colleagues about Authory?

Get it, unless you don’t care about your job or you’re leaving media for good. My reasons for this can be seen in question three, but the bottom line is this:

Authory will bring you peace of mind; no matter how rocky the industry gets (and it will only get rockier) you have a stable, secure portfolio of your work.
