I’m a former national correspondent for the LA Times, where I covered the American West.

Before that, I was a senior editor at Texas Monthly covering immigration, Latino issues, and elections. I'm also a former contributing editor at Politico Magazine.

In 2023, the American Society of Magazine Editors awarded me an ASME Next award for journalists under 30. The judges noted, “Herrera covers stories that give voice to the powerless, from San Quentin inmates to Haitian asylum seekers. His work is distinguished by crisp, lively writing that uses the smallest details to craft narratives of both hardship and joy.”

In 2022, I hosted Texas Monthly's original podcast series White Hats, a Mexican American perspective on the Texas Rangers.

I’m based out of Austin, Texas and I travel frequently around the West and the border regions.
