From the Rubble, A Reckoning: Dispatches from West Asia

The map of West Asia is being redrawn again. Not by the people who live on the land, who plant its soil and mourn its dead — but by the same colonial hands that have always held the pen: distant capitals, boardrooms, and military briefing rooms that cannot find these streets on a map yet feel entitled to decide their fate.

In 2026, I turn my attention to the reshaping of this region.

I come to this not from a newsroom desk, but from the ground. This body of work will be informed by direct field visits to the places the world's editors have already moved on from — occupied Palestine, southern Lebanon, Iraq, Iran — and by interviews with those who are living the resistance, not theorising it. The people who carry the grief and the guns, the mothers and the organisers, the clerics and the secular nationalists, the young who have inherited a war they did not start.

The Western press calls a resistance fighter a terrorist and an airstrike a precision operation. It demands Arabs condemn violence in languages forced upon them, while the violence that never stops — the siege, the sanction, the settlement, the checkpoint — is simply filed under policy. I have watched this double standard operate for long enough. This work will name it, document it, and refuse it.

This is, at its heart, a project of decolonising knowledge.

The Western world has been handed a version of West Asia assembled from imperial archives, embedded journalism, and think-tank consensus — a collectively held story of the region in which Arabs and Muslims are perpetual problems, never protagonists; recipients of history, never its makers. That story was always a tool of control. What I intend to build, dispatch by dispatch, interview by interview, is an alternative archive — one that returns agency to those who have been written out of their own narrative.

This writing will serve as a record. A record of colonial and imperial injustice for those who will come after and ask: did anyone see this? Did anyone say so plainly?

The people of this region are not a crisis to be managed. They are the inheritors of civilisations that were philosophising, mapping the stars, and building law when Europe was centuries from its Enlightenment. In the spirit of those who named reality before me — Nasser's dream of Arab dignity, the intellectual honesty of Edward Said, the journalists who filed dispatches the wire services refused to carry — I offer this work as both record and resistance.

For my people — Asian, Arab, the sons and daughters of West Asia — this is a reminder of our depth, our lineage, our right to exist on our own terms — outside the gaze of a dominant white Western ideology that has always needed our diminishment to justify its own expansion. I know this not as observer, but as one who carries the name and the wound.

For Western audiences: this is an education long overdue.

The empire always calls the story complicated.

I will make it plain.
