I’ve been experimenting with Reddit as a full distribution and conversion system for my newsletter The First Pass. I grew it from 66 subscribers to a massive number of 184 (as of now) in just 40 days.

Instead of relying on direct promotion, I focus on blending into subreddit culture, providing value, and converting through trust. Which is the base norm for any kind of Reddit growth system.

Here I break down the whole system as a case study with as much detail as I can.

The Shift: From Posting to System Thinking

Most people treat Reddit like a billboard. Post something, drop a link, hope someone clicks.

It doesn't work. And Reddit will punish you for trying.

What worked for me was a complete shift in how I thought about the platform — not as a distribution channel, but as a system with distinct layers. Each layer does something different. And none of them work in isolation.

Build the reputation first. The reach follows.

Most people get this backwards.

They make an account, post something, drop a link, and wonder why nobody sees it. Or worse, why the account gets flagged. Reddit's spam filters are aggressive, and a new account that jumps straight to posting content looks exactly like what the algorithm is trained to catch: a brand account trying to extract value from a community it has never contributed to.

So don't start at Layer 1. Start at Layer 3.

When I say Layer 3, I mean comments. Just comments. Find the subreddits where your audience already lives and spend time there just as a person. Answer questions. Share opinions. Be wrong sometimes. Argue a little. This is how Reddit karma gets built, and karma is effectively your trust score on the platform. It tells Reddit and the community that you're a real person who belongs there.

This phase feels slow because nothing is visibly happening. No subscribers, no clicks, no growth metrics to screenshot. But it's doing something more important: it's making you a known quantity in the room before you try to say anything worth hearing.

I call this "account warming." Once you've a warm account aka a few weeks of genuine participation, a karma score that doesn't scream "made this account yesterday," you move to Layer 2. More intentional comments. Longer answers. Starting to build a recognisable presence in specific threads and communities.

Layer 1, the posts, comes last. By the time you publish something, you're not a stranger asking for attention. You're someone the community has already seen around.

That sequencing is everything. It's the difference between a post that gets traction and one that disappears. Or gets you shadowbanned.

Layer 1: Content That Blends In

The goal of a Reddit post is not conversion. It's acceptance.

Reddit communities have culture, tone, unwritten rules. The moment a post feels like marketing, it's dead. So I focused on content that was practical, immediately useful, and native to the subreddit — the kind of thing someone would write if they genuinely wanted to help.

One post I wrote broke down how to find fresh internships using LinkedIn search filters and Google operators. No CTA. No newsletter plug. Just a useful breakdown.

That post hit 9.7K+ views, 200+ shares, and directly moved my subscriber count. It was the entry point into a longer journey with my content.

Layer 2: Comments as the Real Lever

The X factor of Reddit didn't come from posts at all. It came from comments.

Instead of treating them as an afterthought, I used comments to answer questions properly, add context the post didn't cover, and just… talk like an expert yet helpful person. Match the platform's tone which is casual, occasionally sarcastic, never formal.

This does two things. It extends the lifespan of a post well past its initial spike. And it builds familiarity. People start recognising your name before they've ever visited your profile. On Reddit, a post gets you attention. Consistent comments build trust.

I was immediately the #1 commenter of multiple subreddits in my niche.

Layer 3: Conversion Without Forcing It

Direct promotion on Reddit kills reach. The platform can smell a pitch.

So I don't pitch. My newsletter is linked in my profile.

I mention it in context when it's genuinely relevant. That's it.

The pattern that plays out most often looks like this: someone reads the post, engages with a comment, checks the profile, subscribes. Or they just ask directly "can I get the link?" and that's when I share it.

Not before.

An Underrated Layer: 1:1 Help

Beyond posts and comments, some of the highest-trust interactions happened in DMs. People asking about internships, resumes, how to approach a job search. These aren't scalable. But they convert better than any post, because they're real.

Helping someone figure out where to apply doesn't feel like growth work. But it is, because it builds the kind of credibility that no amount of posting can manufacture.

What Actually Makes This Work

Reddit isn't built for polished branding or aggressive marketing. It rewards contribution, relevance, and authenticity. The moment you stop trying to "market" and start trying to be useful, the platform starts working with you instead of against you.

The system only holds up because it respects where it lives. And that's exactly why Google and other LLMs see it in such high regards.
