Charles is a Peabody award-winning radio producer. He spent 24 years as a senior producer and interviewer for the national show on public radio, To the Best of Our Knowledge.

Charles in honored to have his 24 years of public radio programs (a part of the complete 35-year archive of To the Best of Our Knowledge) archived at The Library of Congress.

His 2024 audio documentary, “The Spirit of Jim Thorpe,” was awarded first place by the Indigenous Journalists Association.

In 2025 he produced the “Climate Narratives” audio documentary series in Illulissat, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). You can listen here.

Charles is the author of "Lithium Jesus: A Memoir of Mania" (University of Wisconsin Press).

He is a recording artist with A.M.P.-RECS - a music label based in Guadalajara, México.

Charles started an internet café in Prague, was an anti-nuke activist in Amsterdam, managed a record label, and even ran a circus. You can also ask him about making pottery in Costa Rica or creating strange sculptures in Madison, WI (where he currently lives).
