A Tallahassee judge gave a verbal ruling on Thursday saying that Florida’s 15-week ban was unconstitutional on its face.

My colonial childhood home stands illuminated. Its elegance reminds me of my mother, Rosie. She loathed its modest size. She’s dead.

Three weeks ago, the week before the Florida 2022 legislative session began, a reporter-friend from D.C. reached out to me with a story. The private contractor that solely administers Florida’s Medicaid program for its sickest low-income children had stopped paying its bills. Now hundreds, potentially thousands, of chi

Even Gov. Ron DeSantis’ wife, Casey, a cancer patient with presumably a compromised immune system, was maskless in a crowded state House gallery during his Tuesday address.

When was the last time your doctor called or texted just to check in on you?

Look no further than the most recent Florida legislative session to see how hospitals dominate, at patients’ expense.

When I came home from the hospital, the story goes, Joseph held me in his arms so tenderly that my mom had a hard time pulling me away. I was just a newborn and so I don't remember, but I have seen a photo of us like that, me tiny and him just a loving four-year-old big brother.

Making hospitals proactive and efficient could have a dramatic effect on the patient experience.

Losing out on estrogen during that time was very hard on my body and mind. And, by the time all that was over, when the doctors declared me cancer-free, I was beyond done with the health care system. I was at my wits end all the time with how doctors, hospitals, insurance and society treated me once I became ill.

Everything’s coming up roses, readers. Two weeks ago, I published my health care manifesto, outlining my vision for our future as patients. We must empower patients to take charge of their care, and Barred Owl Press is making educating patients our mission.

When it came time for my annual scans last year, to ensure that I was still in remission for breast cancer, I got a glimpse into what the future of health care could look like.  I did two things in preparation for those tests that I hadn’t done before: I shopped around for the exams, and I demanded to ingest the necess

Happy New Year's Eve, readers.    Two months ago, I launched Barred Owl Press to amplify the patient's voice in a medical system controlled by corporations. Through essays and original reporting, we seek to transform it from one focused on making money to one focused on making patients well.   Barred Owl Press' first p

Happy Thanksgiving, readers. I am so thankful for you all. Barred Owl Press is a company dedicated to amplifying the patient's voice in a medical system controlled by corporations. I know about this world firsthand as a health reporter and cancer patient (now in remission). Life Inside is our first publication. It's a

I want to stress the importance of finishing active treatment. This is the first and main and most important phase of treatment, the goal of which is to eradicate your body of cancer. I believe this is the only way to fight malignant tumors already in your body: with science. But do whatever you want otherwise.

I have never felt more dehumanized in my life than I have at the hospital. And, I think perhaps because I was in the prime of my life, perhaps because I am still regularly objectified by men, that I recognized how the medical industry was slowly changing me from a woman to a test subject.

Slaying cancer is easy sometimes it turns out. As much of a break God cut me on cancer, he’s not spared me on my return to society. It’s become impossible and I don’t know why. I have a feeling it would all make a lot more sense if I could feel my fingers or my toes.

I’ve never been able to fully relate to my mom or my therapist exactly what my mental breakdown has been about. It is about the obvious toll of the physical trauma I endured during treatment, the stress I felt in having to work during it, the emotional angst from contemplating my own mortality.
