Matt Morgan is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, Honorary Professor for the Public Understanding of Medicine, and a regular BMJ columnist. He is medical advisor to The National Theatre London’s production of Nye, the story of Aneurin Bevan starring Michael Sheen, BBC Radio 4’s panel show Best Medicine, Casualty and the forthcoming Channel 4 series Stepping Up. Through three books, he has explored what it truly means to live. In CRITICAL, he revealed the struggles fought at life’s most fragile edge. In ONE MEDICINE, he uncovered the hidden threads that bind every species and make survival possible. In A SECOND ACT, he asked what we do with the extraordinary gift of life when it is given back to us. He has contributed to more than 50 scientific articles following his PhD in artificial intelligence, spoken at some of the world’s largest book festivals, and written for publications from The Guardian to Esquire. His broadcasting includes BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme and international television appearances on CNN and the BBC. He delivered the 2023 Woodridge Lecture and the 2025 James Reason Lecture, has spoken at The Wellcome Trust, and was nominated for the Royal Society’s David Attenborough Prize for public engagement. In 2024, he was listed among the top fifty most influential people in health technology. He is a member of the BMJ Commission on the Future of the NHS, founder of The Dictionary of Blood and Silence, ambassador for 2Wish charity, and patron of The Humanimal Trust. He lives in Cardiff with his family and loves ice cream.
