About me

I'm Vidya Muthulakshmi Manickavasagam, PhD—a bioprocess engineer, science communicator, and educator.

I believe in the power of sustainable bioprocesses in help addressing global environmental challenges. There is tremendous amount of technological advancements that bioprocessing can offer, towards making this world a better place for all living organisms. Of course, there are challenges and we are getting there. But, the journey is most definitely exciting.

But, I think this excitement is hidden in scientific research papers, industry Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the like. With the growing information age, I think it is equally important to ensuring that scientific knowledge is accessible, understandable, and useful to society.

So I decided to be a bioprocess engineer at day and a science communicator by the night.

As a science communicator, I am working on four projects primarily.

  1. My blog Bioprocess Field Notes on Substack: Here, I write about what is bioprocess and how it is already blended as part of our life. I aim to bring atleast an idea of what is it all about to everyone.
  2. Educator at Bioprocess Field Notes : As someone who loves to learn, there has been so many concepts that were disconnected which I couldn't relate or visualise as a student. Over time with better context and with the help of wonderful teachers, the concepts started to make sense. So, I want to do the same for other students and professionals. Through concept focused videos here, I break down bioprocess engineering concepts and build the connections that help them become easier to understand, remember, and apply.
  3. Popular science and Science Journalism: I write interesting updates in the field of bioprocess and dive in breadth onto comprehensive topics for curious minds through articles. I also report and write features as a science journalist.
  4. Book author: (The most exciting of all four projects, but definitely a long-term one!!) Writing a children's book introducing bioprocessing to young minds, as well as a popular science book for general readers.

I am always in for a chat about bioprocess development, science communication, education or any exciting piece of science.

If you see possibilities for collaboration, have an idea to share, or simply think about science in the same curious way I do, I'd love to hear from you.
