Hi, I'm Tyler McBrien.
I'm the managing editor of Lawfare, a non-profit publication covering law, national security, and foreign policy, and the host and creator of "Who Blew Up the Guidestones?" — a narrative audio investigation from the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and Goat Rodeo — which the Tribeca film festival selected as part of its 2026 podcast showcase. I am represented by Isabel Mendía at The Cheney Agency.
I've covered politics, war, criminal justice, international law, weird government tech, and historical memory for outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, The Atlantic, Slate, The Intercept, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, Mother Jones, The Baffler, the Los Angeles Review of Books, The Dial, and elsewhere, and I've appeared on MSNBC, BBC, PBS, ABC (Australia), and CBC Radio.
I also like to build tools and data visualizations, such as this interactive map and field guide to accessing state court records and this archive and reading room of materials related to the Jan. 6 attack that the Trump administration deleted from government websites.
In a past life, I worked as an editor with the Council on Foreign Relations, a Princeton in Africa Fellow in South Africa, a Law & Justice Journalism Project Fellow, and a freelancer for organizations such as the Brennan Center for Justice, Solutions Journalism Network, and Tactical Tech. I have a master's degree in international relations from the University of Chicago.
