I began writing professionally in the early 2000s with my blog, The Road to Surfdom, which I set up while living in Washington DC. Surfdom was part of the first wave of social media and the site attracted a large international following. In 2005, I moved back to Australia and was offered a job writing for News Ltd. As such, I was the first independent online writer and commentator hired by a mainstream media firm in Australia. My News Ltd site, Blogocracy, ran for five years and again, attracted a large, engaged audience.

I then wrote a book about the changes in media wrought by digitisation, and The New Front Page (Scribe, 2013) remains a seminal work on that period of transformation of the industry. By now I was also a regular contributor to various newspapers and magazines, and was employed by the University of Melbourne to run units in social media and entrepreneurial journalism in their postgraduate school of journalism, The Centre for Advancing Journalism.

My next book, Why The Future Is Workless (NewSouth 2016), extended my interest in work and technological change, and addressed issues around automation, artificial intelligence and the future of work. The book created international interest and was, for instance, translated into Korean. Since its release, I have been a regular speaker at public events on the topic, and am engaged by both business and government to discuss the ongoing effects of technology on work. Over the last few years I have spoken about the ethics of artificial intelligence with Deep Mind, Google's AI lab in London; with the Korea Legislation Research Institute as well as the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, speaking about the ramifications of automation for the law and for the arts; and I have been a keynote speaker for the 2018 Rhodes Forum for the Dialogue Research Institute of Civilizations, and for the 2019 Australia and New Zealand School Government Conference.

In 2018, I published The Future of Everything (NewSouth), which also looks at technological change, but is focussed on the effects of technology on key democratic institutions, including the media, universities and government itself.
