About Mia

Hello! My name is Mia Cortés Castro, and I'm a multimedia journalist from Puerto Rico. My interests in journalism combine a passion for audience-forward reporting and a curiosity about the changing media landscape. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I witnessed firsthand the lack of accessibility the traditional digital media model provides, especially to underserved, bilingual communities. Thus, upon entering the student journalism space at Yale, I became committed to immersing myself in every type of journalism possible — from print, to broadcast, to social media and digital. I am passionate about the communication of stories between these formats to preserve audience engagement and ensure coverage of diverse communities with differing news access. As I enter the workforce, I am eager to find a newsroom in which multimedia journalism is used to value and pursue diverse sourcing and stories that value readership.
