The way a parent responds when a child comes out can shape that memory forever.
According to LifeSpeak expert Dr. Danna Bodenheimer, LCSW, coming out is a complex, nonlinear process and how the people closest to someone respond can make all the difference.
This Pride Month, we're spotlighting some of the expert guidance we're proud to offer parents and caregivers of LGBTQIA2S+ children. Because showing up well for your kid doesn't require having all the answers. It requires staying open.
A few things Dr. Bodenheimer reminds us:
→ Invite the conversation before it happens. Normalizing gender and sexuality in everyday family dialogue makes it easier for kids to speak up when it matters.
→ Don't make it about you. The person coming out is the most vulnerable one in the room. Center their experience.
→ Ask about language. Don't assume. Let your child tell you what words feel right for them.
→ You don't need the right words. Presence, openness, and curiosity go further than getting it perfect.
Small shifts in understanding can make a big difference at home. Read Dr. Bodenheimer's full resource for parents here: https://lnkd.in/gjcvpKcz
