Role: Content Strategist (Contract) | Quanta Magazine
Target audience: Science news consumers and research communities; B2C
Challenge: Deeply reported, high-quality science journalism wasn’t reaching its full potential on social platforms, particularly given the complexity of the subject matter.
Objective: Expand audience reach, increase engagement, and drive meaningful referral traffic from social media — without compromising editorial rigor.
Context & Goal
Quanta Magazine is an award-winning, editorially independent publication funded by the Simons Foundation, known for making complex research in mathematics, physics, biology, and computer science accessible through deeply reported journalism.
Despite strong editorial quality, Quanta’s social media presence was underperforming as a growth and referral channel when I was approached to develop a strategic social media overhaul, which I then executed over a three-month period.
Strategy
I proposed a three-part social media strategy designed to unlock growth without compromising editorial integrity, informed by similar challenges I had addressed while running social media for the New York Times Travel desk.
1. Audit existing social landscape
- Evaluated posting frequency, platform performance, and referral traffic
- Benchmarked Quanta against peer science publications to identify gaps and opportunities
- Identified influencers and internal contributors with strong social followings who could amplify reach
2. Identify and optimize shareable content
- Mapped Quanta’s core subject areas (physics, math, biology, computer science) to social-friendly formats
- Prioritized evergreen journalism that could be resurfaced and reframed
- Recommended new visual and multimedia formats — including quote cards, graphics, short videos, and live Q&As — to increase engagement
3. Establish a clear promotion workflow and growth plan
- Increased posting frequency to improve visibility (e.g., Twitter from ~3 posts/day to ~8, timed strategically based on existing engagement metrics)
- Introduced a more consistent cadence using a mix of new and archival content
- Defined tone and voice for social content as warm, conversational, and inspiring
- Set clear growth targets and commit to weekly measurement and iteration using platform analytics and Google Analytics
This plan was designed to be practical, adaptable, and measurable from the outset.
Execution
Following approval of the strategy, I moved directly into hands-on execution:
- Implemented the revised posting cadence across platforms, particularly Twitter and Facebook
- Rewrote social copy to foreground curiosity, clarity, and “why it matters” framing
- Resurfaced high-quality archival content alongside new stories to maintain consistency and volume
- Applied rapid subject-matter learning to ensure accuracy while making complex ideas approachable
- Monitored performance weekly and adjusted frequency, timing, and formats based on engagement and traffic signals
This approach mirrored what had worked at the New York Times, where I optimized the reach and value of evergreen travel content while carefully adapting it to Quanta’s editorial voice and audience.
Results & Impact
The gains achieved reflected not just increased activity, but more effective alignment between editorial value, social presentation, and audience behavior.
Audience growth (Q2; quarter over quarter)
- Facebook: 72,471 likes (+17.5%)
- Twitter: 24,765 followers (+21.1%)
- Instagram: 1,077 followers (+25%)
- Newsletter subscribers: 27,350 (+15.9%)
Record-setting performance
- Added 1,480 Twitter followers in June alone, the largest single-month gain in Quanta’s history
- Average Twitter growth increased from 854 followers/month (Q1) to 1,440/month (Q2)
- Set Twitter account on a path and pace reach and exceed this substantial increase based on daily growth rate
Reach, engagement, and traffic
- Tweet volume increased 65% quarter over quarter
- Tweet impressions increased by approximately 1.3 million, also a 65% increase
- Social referral traffic rose sharply across Facebook (+34%) and Twitter (+49%)
- Link clicks from Quanta’s Twitter account increased 48.7%
Why this matters
This case study demonstrates my ability to:
- Design and execute a data-informed social growth strategy from scratch
- Rapidly adapt to unfamiliar, highly technical subject matter
- Apply proven lessons from previous editorial wins to new contexts
- Drive meaningful growth and referral traffic, not just surface-level engagement
It shows how thoughtful social strategy can dramatically expand the reach of high-quality journalism — even in complex and specialized domains.
