The Japanese logo for SRW Z2 Remastered, and the usual Full Metal Fukumi stream layout

Asalam aleikoum how's it going. Bandai Namco held a special Super Robot Wars 35th anniversary live stream on August 1, 2026.

The stream most notably revealed Dai ni Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Hakai-hen Remastered, currently in development. Hakai-hen, nicknamed SRW Z2-1 by fans, was first released on PSP exclusively in Japan on April 14 2011. The English version of the live stream also featured an official English name for the game: Super Robot Wars ZII - Ruination Remastered.

The announcement trailer only featured text and the game's logo, we haven't seen any gameplay yet. The anniversary live stream's VOD will be made public at a later date without the JAM Project concert segments.

The current producer of the series, Toma Kota (henceforth TomaP), explained on the live stream that this was a secret project launched to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the series. He noted how many fans believe, rightfully, that remaster projects for Super Robot Wars games are extremely difficult to materialize, due to the many different companies and copyrights involved.

TomaP explained they managed to overcome this challenge thanks to the fans' support, eagerly demanding new ways to play the older games again. After going through talks and negotiations with all the parties involved, they were finally able to publicly announce the remaster.

TomaP also explained why they decided to remaster SRW Z2-1 specifically. First, the game was extremely popular and highly evaluated at the time of its release on PSP. Next, analyzing recent player surveys made it clear that the SRW Z2 games are the most popular games in the Z series, with the highest player count.

Furthermore, TomaP stated that the game is being developed using the same engine as Super Robot Wars Y (Unity Engine) and will feature a similar User Interface and menus. The development team is putting in extra care into the attack animations and remastering them in the most beautiful way possible.

As for the release date, TomaP stated that's it's very unlikely the game will be released before the end of 2026, but they do have an estimate in mind.

Last but not least, Super Robot Wars ZII - Ruination Remastered will be localized in "several languages" and released "worldwide" according to TomaP.

Recent Super Robot Wars games all include English, Chinese and Korean localization so at the very least these three languages should be supported in the remaster as well. Further details will be revealed at a later date.

It's important to note that Hakai-hen, or SRW Z2-1, was followed by a second game also released on PSP around a year later: Dai ni Ji Super Robot Taisen Z Saisen-hen, or SRW Z2-2. The game is a direct sequel, featuring the second seasons or second halves of many of the anime series featured in the first game. While TomaP didn't mention anything about it on stream, it's possible that a remaster for SRW Z2-2 will be released at some point as well.

Short Analysis

Hakai-hen was most notably the first time Gundam OO, Code Geass, and Guren Lagann appeared in Super Robot Wars. These three series are among the most popular anime series of the 2000s decade. The remaster in itself is a huge surprise, but I'm not surprised this is the game they picked. The Z2 games are also standalone enough to understand the story even if you haven't played Z1 on PS2. And most of the units in Z1 are also playable in Z2.

As a reminder, see the series list on Akurasu Wiki (the best English resource on SRW, support them as much as you can).

There are very few cases of remasters in the 35 years of history of Super Robot Wars, and depending on who you ask, they are more akin to new games or remakes rather than remasters: Super Robot Wars 4 first released on Super Nintendo and later got enhanced ports on PS1 and Sega Saturn with added content and voice acting. Super Robot Wars Alpha for PS1 was released on Dreamcast but with completely different 3D graphics instead of the series' traditional 2D, etc. There was also a small remake of the first Super Robot Wars game included in first-print copies of SRW Z3-1.

This is the first time a SRW game gets a remaster since the beginning of the HD era and the popularization of the term "remaster".

This is definitely an unprecedented situation and a very hopeful one for the future of the series. I'm one of the many fans who believed any remaster would never ever happen due to the copyrights issues.

However, I believe this is an exceptional situation, and I do not expect new SRW remasters to be pushed out regularly. Bandai Namco clearly isn't going to churn out Super Robot Wars remasters when they're already struggling doing that with Tales of. This will not be a Square Enix situation, where remasters for the Mana series or the SaGa series got released in quick succession (with many games translated for the first time). However this does at least heighten the chances of getting remasters of the SRW OG games.

Note that a full summary of the stream, which included stories on the development of the series, messages from Go Nagai and Tomino Yoshiyuki, etc, will be published in the next few days insha Allah, exclusively for ko-fi subscribers.
