Gage Roberts (he/him) is a Indigiqueer, trans, multidisciplinary artist of Métis, Algonquin, French, and Irish ancestry. He works across visual art, writing, film, and embodied storytelling. His practice approaches the body as a site of lived knowledge and material memory, shaped by his own experiences of incarceration, addiction, care, and survival.
Gage’s work resists fixed genres and moves between text, image, and material process. His visual practice includes hand papermaking, intaglio printmaking, installation, and collaborative research. He develops custom paper using plant medicines and fibres as integral material components, and works with intaglio processes that emphasize touch, labor, and bodily engagement. These material practices operate alongside his narrative and film work, forming a sustained inquiry into embodiment, memory, and trace.
Gage’s print work Niwin Mashkikī Mijiginishkwemikag, began in collaboration with artist Katie Jung, and was presented as a distinct collaborative work within Jung’s exhibition, The Body Is a Darkroom. His collaborative projects prioritize shared process, and long-term relational working methods.
Alongside his visual practice, Gage is currently writing his first book, Ghosts of a Living Body. His writing and visual work inform one another through shared concerns with embodiment, memory, and material presence.
Gage has self-published thirteen works ranging from personal essays to narrative nonfiction. His zine Hustle Hustle Hustle (2013), which interweaves lived experience with analysis of sex work, transphobia, addiction, and the prison industrial complex, was distributed by Metonymy Press. His film work has screened internationally, including at the London Porn Film Festival and Berlin Porn Film Festival, and he was nominated for Favourite Trans Model and Most Popular Trans Masculine Performer at the 2024 PH Awards.
Born and raised in Thadinadoniih (Guelph, ON), Gage was incarcerated as a youth and young adult and has been involved in anti-prison and abolitionist movements since his teens. He is currently based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montreal, QC).
