Stand Your Ground Laws
I am not a lawyer. I have attended many classes and read many sources on self-defense law with respect to both firearms and martial arts. This is a distillation of my acquired information and should not be considered legal advice but a basis for…

Well, poo.
Turns out the voting database I downloaded for the 2018 election is flawed. If you add up the entire population of its county subdivisions, you get almost 363 million people in the US, which is about 35 million too many. Obvious error is that it…

Something Worth Looking At
I have been, frankly, too in despair to do a lot of data mining the past few days. But today I sucked it up and downloaded my usuals and did the basics. And, lo and behold, there is something new in the data. Let's look at WA state first. This is…

Some Graphs 2020-04-22
US Daily Deaths show a brief downturn but rise again on the 21st. I suspect the downturn is New York, with other states picking up the slack. The comments to this entry are closed.

For those of you who've read various stories about Amazon branded deliveries stopping or Amazon ending deals with other sites: this is what it is about -- reducing "non-essential" order load. Amazon has been hit with a huge increase in orders. Last…

Doublings
We hit 1000 deaths between 1 April (955 deaths) and 2 April (1299 deaths). That's between 8 and 9 days to double the number of deaths per day. Today we have a bit over 18000 deaths total, and we were at 9129 on 4 April. That's 6 days to double.…

Why the IHME-UW Projections Concern Me

Death Rates: COVID-19 vs. Seasonal flu
I've consulted six different summary sites (ncov2019.live, woldometers, Johns Hopkins, WHO, Google, and the BBC). There is variation but all agree the current death rate worldwide from COVID-19 is about 5.8%. We all understand that both cases and…

Math is unrelenting
Well, tomorrow is 4 April and we will hit 8000 deaths. Couple of days late on 2.5 day doubling, but right on (3 doublings in 9 days) for 3 day doubling. So, 9 days from tomorrow to 64000? That would be the 13th or 14th. Math is unrelenting.

Math Sucks
On 19 March, I wrote that we'd see 1000 deaths in two weeks. It's taken seven days to get to 1080 (a point in time today, it'll be different soon). Deaths are doubling roughly every 2.5 days. If that continues, 8000 dead by 2 April. If it drops to…

One week from 150 to 1000
And we are over 1000 dead in the US, barely a week since 150. Deaths are doubling about every 2.5 days. If this continues, in a week we will have 8000 deaths. If it drops to every five days, it will take two weeks to reach 8000 deaths.

Update to RAW vs DNG
It’s esoteric but I want to preserve this information. If you use sidecar (XMP) files in Lightroom, DNG files do not have a sidecar file as the metadata is stored directly in the DNG. This has significant implications for backing up files. If you…
