The MSTEP is an assessment designed to gauge how well students are progressing toward state subject matter standards, according to the Michigan Department of Education. The standards are developed by educators and broadly outline what students should know and be able to do to be prepared to enter the workplace, career education training, and college.

Michigan education officials, in a release accompanying the scores, said students in most grades and most subjects performed better than last year on state assessments. For the MSTEP in math and ELA, student scores did improve in four of the five grades, but math proficiencies remain low.
