Explosive device found at Chelsea gas station

An explosive object found near a Speedway gas station in Chelsea was removed on Oct. 9 after it was reported by employees this morning as a possible pipe bomb.

A Speedway employee reported a possible pipe bomb on the property in a call to the Chelsea Police Department around 7:30 a.m., police said. When officers responded, they found an object that resembled an explosive device and cordoned off the area.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene, confirmed it was an explosive device and safely removed the device.

"The Chelsea Police would like to remind everyone that if they come across a suspicious package or a possible explosive device, do not touch it, back away, and contact their local police department," Police Chief Kevin Kazyak said in a press release.

Chelsea PD is working with the MSP Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on an investigation. Chelsea Police asked that anyone with knowledge of the incident contact the department at 734-475-9122.
