It feels like an eternity since I did a good old fashioned newsletter! Over the last month, I've been so busy that I couldn't think straight, but it was all for very good reason.

At the beginning of this new DCU adventure, James Gunn assured fans that the reboot to the franchise would not be homogeneous. Tones and genres would differ from project to project. Gotham would look like Gotham; Metropolis like Metropolis; Coast City like Coast City, and the stories would have whatever energy deemed correct by the team of the given project. Though Gunn's kept that promise so far, I always have my doubts when horror films are meant to fit in with an overarching universe that dec

Whalefall is preposterous. That sentiment isn't over the film's premise, of which sees a young man unwittingly gobbled up by a sperm whale embroiled in battle with a surprisingly vindictive squid. While that, too, is absurd, it's the kind of absurdity that's welcome in the disaster/survival genre. No, Whalefall is preposterous because its emotional core is such unmitigated nonsense that even the internet's favorite Bad Day Haver™, Austin Abrams, can't save it from itself. From a technical aspe

Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson star in the Colleen Hoover adaptation "Verity," which is full of twists and turns.

GHOST IN THE CELL is a gnarly socio-political horror comedy of the ages.

Gorehounds, rejoice! Australia has done it again with KICK ON.

Primetime is, ultimately, a well made and even better performed film. It’s profoundly frustrating that the light it shines on an ongoing Hollywood issue reflects directly back on its own production.

Fresh out of Fantastic Fest, THE CYCLE is a thrilling good time.

THE HERETIKS is a witchy home invasion film that's bound to be polarizing.

Maika Monroe, Ruth Wilson, and Thomasin McKenzie deliver frantic tale of women’s wrongs.

Writing a well-crafted, mean-spirited film is harder than most people think. It’s not enough to just be cruel and nasty; you’ve got to add a little hope for your protagonists or a touch of justification for your antagonist, and you can’t be too cloying about either. It’s not about balance — that would imply some […]

Festival Coverage Note: I will be dropping Fantastic Fest reviews throughout the festival. To avoid spamming you, I'm only going to send the big ones directly to your inbox (with a digest of what I've done so far included of course). If you want to see them as they drop, follow me across social at @ThatWitchMia or check back on the site as the fest continues. Coven members and above will also get the links in slack! Things I love in movies: humanitarian missions, women murdering would-be rapist

Resident Evil is a tricky franchise to tackle. The subject matter isn’t particularly daunting or overly difficult to adapt, the fandom is just… well… you exist on the internet, you know.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reunite for Practical Magic 2, a sequel that delivers the same vibes as the first film but isn't without flaws.

We're switching things up a bit this week. Usually we chat about what I've been watching, but today I want to take a look at what I'm excited for in the coming months.

Angourie Rice and Spike Fearn star in Alicia MacDonald's rom-com where too miuch holds it back from even empty-calorie kind of fun.

Existential horror might not be new, but doing it well is a challenge that not a lot of filmmakers accomplish. Though It Ends’ director and writer Alex Ullom isn’t the first to do so, there’s an impressiveness to the level of success he has in using the film’s ambiguity to appeal to a broad audience.  […]

The “Insidious” franchise might not be the longest running in the genre, but hitting your sixth installment isn’t anything to sneeze at.

Lanterns succeeds in many respects, but its most important trick is immediately showcasing the chemistry between Pierre and Chandler.

Its logic is nonsense, sure, but it's a nice, entertaining summer flick that is made for a weekend at the movies with friends and family.
