The National Republican Congressional Committee on Thursday announced a “first-of-its-kind multi-million-dollar” investment into several swing districts ahead of the 2024 election.

The group, which is dedicated to electing Republicans to the House of Representatives, said it was investing money and resources into 21 initial battleground districts where a Republican is the incumbent, including multiple New York seats, Nebraska’s 2nd congressional district, Oregon’s 5th congressional district and Montana’s 1st district, among others. Several of the seats are districts that President Joe Biden won in 2020, but are currently represented by a Republican House member — prime targets for Democrats during a presidential year.

An NRCC spokesperson told The Messenger the main purpose of the program is to increase resources in districts where the Republican National Committee won’t be as heavily involved this cycle.

“Two thirds of our competitive seats are in non-presidential states, the RNC just isn't going to invest in those states at the level they would have if they were a presidential swing seat,” the spokesperson said.

Additionally, the program is designed to "assist campaigns with building individual brands and to encourage early and election-day voting among swing voters through direct voter contact," according to a news release.

The spokesperson added that this program is “unprecedented” for the NRCC. “We've never run a field program at this level.”

Currently, Republicans hold the majority in the House, but Democrats only need to win five additional seats to flip the lower chamber. As the 2024 election cycle heats up, Republicans are looking to not only defend their majority, but expand it. According to the NRCC, in addition to the 21 incumbent seats they are investing in, the group also plans to open more “Battle Station” offices in “more than a dozen swing-seat districts” to support Republican challengers.

The money will go toward opening offices and putting paid organizers in these districts “who are going to recruit volunteers. Essentially, for three buckets. … Doors, telephones and texting,” the spokesperson said.

With the NRCC paying for certain aspects of the field operations, that leaves campaigns with more money for TV advertising, the spokesperson said.

“By picking up fields, it allows the candidates to redirect that money to where they get the most bang for their buck,” they added.

According to a release published by the NRCC on Thursday, in the 21 already-opened “Battle Station” offices across the country, “paid staff already enlisted over 1,000 volunteers to assist with swing-voter contact.”

“Republicans can beat Democrats on the ground this cycle with this unprecedented NRCC investment to persuade and turn out voters," NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson said in a statement. "The NRCC Battle Station program gives GOP campaigns tools to build effective brands with voters and then make sure they turn up at the ballot box - blocking and tackling to grow the majority.”
