The only member of South Carolina’s GOP congressional delegation to endorse former Gov. Nikki Haley is warning members of his party against calling the presidential primary for former President Donald Trump before voters have a chance to weigh in.

“If we're gonna let polls dictate who stays in and who gets out — that's not the way America was founded,” Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), told The Messenger on Friday.

Haley’s longshot White House bid almost became even more of a stretch when the Republican National Committee reportedly floated a draft measure that would endorse former President Donald Trump as the presumptive nominee, according to multiple reports on the resolution.

Lucky for Haley, the group ultimately rescinded that draft resolution after Trump pushed back on the idea, CNN reported on Thursday, leaving Haley’s campaign standing for another day.

But with less than a month to go until Haley’s home state primary in South Carolina, there is still no easy path to victory for the former governor and U.N. ambassador. A poll released Friday conducted by the Tyson Group showed Trump leading Haley in South Carolina by almost 30 points, with Trump polling at 58% and Haley at 31%.

“It's been clear for a long time, but certainly in the wake of Iowa and New Hampshire, that something massive and unexpected would have to happen for Trump not to be the Republican Party nominee,” said Inside Elections Deputy Editor Jacob Rubashkin.

Ramesh Ponnuru, the editor of conservative magazine National Review, echoed Rubashkin’s sentiment, telling The Messenger that for Haley to become the nominee, “Lightning would have to strike, repeatedly.”

While Haley spent two terms in the state’s top job, the state’s current governor, Henry McMaster, and seven of the state’s eight Republican members of its congressional delegation have endorsed Trump.

“The fact that Trump has gotten so many endorsements from Republican politicians in South Carolina is an indicator of how widespread the view is that he’s going to be the nominee,” Ponnuru said.

“Everybody is making these decisions on the assumption that he will be the nominee particularly now that he has won both of the first two contests,” Ponnuru continued.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA - JANUARY 24: Republican presidential hopeful and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley holds a rally on January 24, 2024 in North Charleston, South Carolina. After her defeat to Trump in New Hampshire, Haley pledged to continue on to her home state of South Carolina, insisting she still has a path to the nomination.

The lone exception, Norman — who served in the South Carolina state house alongside Haley — however, is sticking by her side.

“She can give us eight years,” Norman told The Messenger in a phone call on Friday. “That's one thing that the Trump campaign cannot argue with.”

Norman, who noted he will be with Haley on the campaign trail this weekend, argued against forcing Haley out of the race, telling The Messenger, “Thank God we've got a choice. Why is that a bad thing?”

Although Republicans have turned up the pressure on Haley to end her Presidential campaign so the GOP can unite around a single candidate, Norman noted that there’s still a long way to go until the Republican National Convention in July — 171 days to be exact.

After Haley came in second place to Trump during New Hampshire’s Tuesday primary, National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel encouraged the Haley campaign to “reflect” on their path to the nomination.

“I'm looking at the math and the path going forward. And I don't see it for Nikki Haley,” McDaniel said. “I think she's run a great campaign. But I do think there is a message that's coming out from the voters, which is very clear. We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which is going to be Donald Trump.”

However, Norman sees it differently, arguing that telling a candidate to end their campaign is ultimately “divisive.”

“That's not their role to do this,” Norman said of the RNC report and McDaniel’s comments. “What happened to let the voters decide? What happened to competition?”

Haley herself has pushed back on calls for her to end her campaign. Responding to calls for her to drop out after Tuesday’s primary election where she placed second behind former President Donald Trump, Haley said intended to continue in the race: "New Hampshire is first in the nation, it is not the last in the nation," Haley said. "This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go."

“She's not a quitter, and she’s been an underdog all her life. But she’s moving forward,” Norman said.
