A dermatologist shares what to consider before trying this daring look
Shaved eyebrows are an emerging trend that’s catching fire on TikTok and flaunted by celebrities like Doja Cat and Amelia Hamlin, but there’s a few things to consider before trying the daring look.
There’s a distinct possibility that your brows may never look the same again — and there’s even a risk that your eyebrows won’t grow back.
It all depends on how the hair is removed, board certified dermatologist Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, M.D., tells The Messenger.
“Anytime you remove hair, you run the risk of the hair coming back patchy or not at all,” Dr. Houshmand, who has a private practice in Dallas, says.
“Regrowth will depend on the method of hair removal — waxing and laser run a higher risk [of not growing back]. Shaving or plucking have less of a risk, but depending on your age, the hair regrowth will vary.”
Further, the hair will grow back at different rates. “Shaving the hair should not be permanent but do be aware of the potential for different texture and pattern of regrowth for the hair,” she says.
Eyebrows take two to three months to regrow on average, she says, and three to four months for them to return to fullness.
Is it safe to shave your eyebrows?
“The area around the eye is very delicate, so you need to be cautious to avoid cuts,” Dr. Houshmand says. “Make sure the razor you are using is specific for this area, don't use a razor designed for your legs.”
Makeup artist and model Raisa Flowers demonstrated via The New York Times, that it’s best to use a dermaplaning razor — gently.
“Just like other areas of the body, shaving can cause bumps, ingrown hairs, or rash,” she adds. “Eyebrows help to protect the eyes. If your eyebrows are gone, your eyes may become more susceptible to dirt, environmental pollutants, dust and cosmetics.”
How should you care for your skin if you remove your eyebrows?
“Make sure you're diligent about applying additional SPF to the shaved brow and reapply during the day,” she says.
“And make sure you are committed to the look and regrowth process before doing this, since it will take some time for the brows to grow back and will make the hair look different.”
In other words, this trend, which celebrates deviance with a nod to drag queens as well as punk and goth cultures — is a commitment — and not everyone can look as divine as Divine.
