A 27-year old Hispanic resident of Mamaroneck told Village police that while standing in line inside the Speedway gas station market at 731 Mamaroneck Ave. Saturday night (August 9,) he was approached by another man, who asked if he had a green card, and told him him to go back to his country.
The suspect, identified as 57-year old Carl B. Jones, allegedly became aggressive after the victim attempted to defuse the situation by laughing off the comment. A former resident of the area, Jones was visiting from South Carolina.
According to the victim, Jones began spitting on him, placed his hands around the victim’s throat, and applied pressure. In self-defense, the victim struck Jones, who retaliated by punching the victim in the face and throwing him to the floor.
Video from surveillance cameras corroborates the victim and several witnesses’ accounts of the incident. Responding officers quickly detained Jones outside the store. EMS treated the victim on the scene.
Jones was taken to Village of Mamaroneck Police Department headquarters, where he was processed and held pending arraignment by the Village of Mamaroneck Court. He is currently charged with Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime, a Class E Felony and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, a Class A Misdemeanor.
