She Means Business: Atelier Modern, Larchmont

She Means Business will be a regular series featuring local businesses owned and operated by women.

If there’s an anchor in the recent growth of specialized retail between Chatsworth and Larchmont Avenues on the Boston Post Road in Larchmont, it is Atelier Modern.

Walk in today, and you will see a range of decor — from two genuine Picassos to bath balm for kids — in an inviting, colorful, even whimsical space. Work by regional artists is rotated every six weeks in the airy, light-filled studio, where you can find a masterpiece or a pair of sunglasses.

The sisters who founded the gallery of “curated expressive, functional art and objects”  have worked to foster a sense of community and outreach between both neighboring retail stores and the public.

One of those sisters, Sarah Bauer, happens to be Mayor of Larchmont (and sells her handknit “yarnimals” here.)  The other sister, Ana Zampino O’Neill, began her career at Christie’s in New York, practiced law, and left the corporate world to pursue this dream about 3 years ago.

“We want to bring the community together and act as a community space,” says Zampino-O’Neill.

The store hosts events, such as several upcoming artist receptions. Earlier this year, Atelier hosted a fashion show featuring clothing, jewelry and accessories from other local stores, and more collaborative events are planned.

Says Bauer, “We love being a space where people can come together and enjoy beautiful things!”

We asked the owners which of these “beautiful things” they’d most like to take home. For Bauer, it’s “After the Party,” a screenprint by Andy Warhol.

“After the Party” by Warhol might be co-owner Mayor Sarah Bauer’s favorite piece

Zampino-O’Neill says she wouldn’t mind walking out with Disco Lemonade by Antoinette Wysocki, an original painting (also available as an embellished print.)

Even if you don’t walk out with something yourself, you’re likely to feel inspired by tasteful design, and ideas for the perfect gift.
