She Means Business is a series on local businesses owned and operated by women.
The morning after showing some of her latest creations at Paris Fashion Week, Andrea Moore Beaulieu is back in Larchmont, moving quickly about her store, The Makers NY, navigating around three busy vintage sewing machines, and arranging her dresses, coats and pants for sale.
“I am always pleasantly surprised by watching creativity come to life,” she says.

Moore Beaulieu opened her Larchmont Avenue store a year and a half ago featuring her in-house brand, Moore. Her one of a kind garments are all made by hand both in the store and at her home workshop in New Rochelle. Creating her own styles most of her life (at age 6 she modified a store-bought pattern for a 4-H fashion show) and working in the fashion realm many years, then pausing to be a stay at home mom of three, Beaulieu says when she first saw the 600 sq. ft. space on Larchmont Avenue, she knew it was time, and this was where, she wanted literally, to set up shop.
Her work is also available online.
“My style is a lot of layering; I love to have tactile differences, sometimes in the same piece: sheer, lace, quilting, velvet, or silk. Pattern play.”

For example, the jacket, left, $275, is made of quilted velvet, with a cotton lining and satin binding, and like most of her clothes, is comes from small batches of “dead stock,” fabric that would normally have been tossed.
This is one way she emphasizes sustainability.
And the inventory is always changing – as much as this is a retail space it’s also Beaulieu’s studio.
Sometimes she will help a customer to rework something they bring in for a customized upcycle and repurpose.

Moore pieces have been shown not only in Paris, but during Fashion Week in New York, and have been featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair.
Now, you don’t have to go far to find something stylish and original right off the catwalk.
