Mitchelle can still clearly recall the night her entire world fell apart.

The house felt suddenly too quiet, and that was the night she discovered a note on the kitchen counter next to a cold cup of tea. She stared at the words, but their meaning became so overwhelming that they blended together.

I’m sorry, I can’t do this anymore.

He wrote only that. No justification. No farewell. Six years of love were destroyed by just seven words. Mitchelle moved like a shadow for days. She attempted, at least, to work, eat, and sleep. But the silence was unbearable. Even music felt too loud, as if it mocked her loneliness.

Then, one evening, she opened a drawer and found something she hadn’t touched in years—her grandmother’s old crochet hook, smooth from use, still wrapped in a half-finished red scarf.

Her fingers trembled as she picked it up. The yarn was soft, familiar. A memory.

The Thread That Holds Us Together.

Mama Bisi, her grandmother, had a lifelong passion for crocheting. Little baby booties, flowers, blankets, and shawls that ended up in charity boxes. "A woman must always have something in her hands, even when life is empty," she would always say. The meaning of that was never clear to Mitchelle. Not till today. Hook in hand, she sat on the floor and began where her grandma had left off. At first, the loops were too loose, the stitches were awkward, and the pattern was lost.

However, the rhythm—loop, pull, twist, repeat—had a breathing-like quality.

And for the first time in weeks, she wasn’t thinking about the door that slammed, the message that never came, the weight of an empty bed.

She was just here.

One stitch at a time.

How Crotchet Became Her Therapy.

Unknown to Mitchelle at the time, crochet felt therapeutic for a reason. Repeated hand motions, such as knitting, crocheting, or even braiding hair, have been shown by scientists to relax the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and relieve stress. It made sense. She felt lighter each time she crocheted, as though she were removing the sadness and replacing it with something new. Before work in the mornings, she knitted. When the silence became too loud during lunch breaks. at night when she was unable to fall asleep and when memories of the past started to make their way into her mind.

And slowly, without realizing it, she started crocheting herself back together

More Than Just Yarn - A New Beginning

Mitchelle created something fresh one evening. It's a crochet top, not simply another blanket or scarf. An actual one. Something that she could wear, something that restored her sense of beauty. With no expectations, she uploaded a photo to Instagram. expecting nothing.

But then—the comments came. A lot of people asking about the pattern. Some wanting to buy. Others talked about how crochet had helped them in ways they had never discussed before. For the first time in a long time, Mitchelle smiled. Not because she made a top. But because she had found her hands again. And with them, a reason to keep going.

What Crotchet Teaches Us About Life.

Months later, Mitchelle looked at the red scarf—the one she had begun that evening, the one she once thought she’d never finish.

It wasn't flawless. Some stitches were too loose, while others were too tight. In some places, she had to start over and fix her faults. However, it was warm. It was complete. She was, too.

A Thread That Never Breaks.

Maybe that’s why crochet will never go out of style. Because it’s not just about yarn.

It’s about patience—the willingness to start over when things fall apart.

It’s about resilience—knowing that even broken threads can still create something beautiful.

It’s about connection—to the past, to ourselves, to the people who need what we create.

So if life ever unravels in your hands, pick up a hook. Let your hands find the rhythm. Stitch by stitch, you’ll find your way back.

Just like Mitchelle did.
