Election Day doesn’t settle our obligations to one another

Election Day is an occasion for my ilk to deliver homilies. We urge readers to set aside their differences, remember how much we have in common, and be gracious about whatever happens. It is agreeable advice, easier to offer than to follow. So many of us regard our politics as expressions of who we are that disagreement can feel like a judgment on our worth. The harder proposition is that decency is not something we can reserve for people we consider decent.
