Superior Glove is giving local residents who want to beautify the community a clean hand up.

In partnership with the Town of Halton Hills, the local business has donated more than 6,000 gloves to 18 local public schools and various community organizations to help with Earth Week garbage clean ups.

“We were thrilled when Halton Hills reached out to us with a donation of a free clean up kit (gloves and bags) to participate in the 22-Minute Makeover event,” said school principal Ian Clark.

“At Park Public School, students engage in ongoing lessons connected to the curriculum regarding environmental challenges and sustainability throughout the school year. Earth Week is just one time when these important conversations take place.”

The donation gives students another opportunity to connect their learning to the real world while making a difference in the community they live in, he said.

At Park Public School, Mrs. Baker’s and Mrs. Winder’s classes connected as learning buddies to talk about the importance of the event, created posters to advertise and educate the school population, and helped organize and distribute the supplies needed to allow students to safely take part in the community clean up on Friday.

“Last year we participated in the event with great success. Community members outside of our school took the time to thank us for the positive actions, and families continue to do similar clean ups outside of school time,” Clark said.

In Acton, Kathleen LaSelva at St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School expressed her gratitude for the contribution from Superior Glove.

“We appreciate their support in keeping our town clean and looking great,” she said.

“St. Joseph's School has participated in many activities to celebrate Earth Week including, litter free lunches, lights off afternoons, promoting reusable water bottles and reusing papers that are 'good on one side.’”

More people signed on for Halton Hills’ 22-Minute Makeover this year, as part of Earth Week, after three years of reduced numbers due to the pandemic.

“Yearly, Superior Glove donates gloves for Earth Day community initiatives. However, when the pandemic started, participation within the community was low.

Fortunately, this year we see a turn in numbers,” said Carleigh Roughley, marketing and community engagement specialist with Superior Glove.

Last week, 12 employees from the local business volunteered to deliver gloves and garbage bags throughout the community. Volunteers included: Giselle Taruvinga, Matt Carr, Louise Marciano, Eugene Gataveckas, Isabel Farrell, Taylor Shirreffs, Cindy Smith, Amandeep Sran, Don Miller, Prasad Tennakoon, Christine Hood, and Brennan Mitchell.
