VUCA is the new black. Which would appear to make conventional approaches to strategic planning almost irrelevant.
The temptation in today's world is to go to one of two extremes:
1. Cast a big, aspirational global vision that has a hint of noble cause about it (e.g. "Connecting the world's people" - Facebook; "Organising the world's information" - Google) and aim for world domination. Rally everyone and everything around that North Star. Here you stay at 30,000 feet, monitoring global mega-trends and place large bets on big shifts.
2. Stay small and agile, iterating in sprints and growing lean so that you can embed continuous innovation into your business.
While neither of these use the measure of real profit I've posted about previously, it's not a case of either / or, but of both / and.
You need something inspirational that's a noble cause, and you need to be light on your feet.
So what does this mean for the future of strategy?
Rather than bang the keyboard for ages, I'm going to make it really simple and refer you to Dr.Jason Fox's latest book How To Lead a Quest - it's the must read tome for 2016 that will take you into the future of strategy. Buy it today, read it several times over and do what it suggests.
That's it. Go start Questing!
