Why planning ahead, preventative care and low-cost options matter more than ever for pet owners

CLEVELAND, Ohio — It's a new year and for many families, it's starting with a tighter budget. Nothing can derail your finances faster than a pet illness or emergency. And the fallout is evidence in shelters here in Northeast Ohio - and all over the country.

"This is Zero. Zero came in as an owner surrender," said a shelter worker in Washington state during an interview late last year. Across the country - shelters faced heartbreaking situations as crates lined hallways, crowded with surrendered or abandoned pets.

“These are not people casually giving up their animals. They love these dogs, they love these cats, they’ve fought to keep them… they’ve tried everything they can," said Andi Anderson Senior Director of Philanthropy and Outreach at PAWS.

Housing insecurity plays a role, but it’s not all. The rising costs of medical supplies, utilities and medicine are leading to bigger vet bills.

So what can pet owners do to cut costs in 2026?

Saving on Pet Care Costs:
• Keep up with preventative care — it’s far cheaper than treating serious illness later.
• Shop around and compare services.
• Events like pop-up vaccination clinics can help keep your pet protected at a fraction of standard prices.

Another consideration — pet insurance, if you don’t already have it.

“If you start them on pet health insurance when they’re young and carry it through their life… pet health insurance will help you if a catastrophic event happens, said Dr. Michael Bailey

Starting insurance while your pet is young often keeps premiums lower. If faced with an emergency some vets also have payment options, such as Care Credit. Another smart move -- setting up a pet health savings account using automatic monthly transfers.
