A few years ago, our daughter walked in the house with Oliver, a black, half-Rottweiler half-Husky puppy. We were not prepared. We named him Oliver because the energetic pup was "all over" the place. Oliver's arrival resulted in our attempting to assemble a crash course in modern pet care. While I have had dogs in the past, much about our suburban sprawl society necessitates a special kind of awareness to keep dogs safe, happy, and healthy.

With winter activities coming and recreational and pet activity on the rise, I recently sat down with a local veterinarian, Dr. Kirsten Nickisch from Alta Animal Hospital in Pocatello, to help spread the word. Her office sees the same preventable problems time and time again; issues that could have been avoided with the right knowledge and care.

Michael: Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, Dr. Nickisch. I have to admit, when Oliver came into our lives, I realized how much I didn't know about modern pet care. What would you say are the most common problems you see that could be prevented?

Dr. Nickisch: Michael, that's a great question. Honestly, the number one issue we see every single day is obesity. Over 50% of the dogs and cats that come through our doors are overweight, and many owners don't even realize it. And it's not just cosmetic. We're talking serious health consequences. Diabetes, joint problems, heart disease. These are all directly linked to obesity in pets.

Michael: That's surprising. I guess I always thought of overweight pets as just being well-loved. What about the opposite problem?

Dr. Nickisch: We do see malnutrition, too, but not as often. This may stem from poor-quality food, underlying health problems, or sadly, neglect.

Michael: So what should pet owners know about proper nutrition?

Dr. Nickisch: Three main things: First, feed a high-quality and balanced diet that's right for your pet's age (or life stage), breed, and specific health needs. Consult with your vet on this. Second, measure portions instead of just eyeballing it. And third, treats should never be more than 10% of their daily calories.

Michael: What about food allergies? How do owners recognize those?

Dr. Nickisch: Watch for itching, ear infections, and digestive issues. These can all signal food sensitivities that need addressing.

Michael: Now, I have to ask about something that terrifies me as a pet owner: poisoning. What are the biggest dangers in our homes?

Dr. Nickisch: Oh, we see this weekly, Michael. The scary part is that many owners have no idea these things are toxic. Human medications are huge—ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and others. These can make your pet very ill, or in some cases, they can even cause death. And don't forget foods. Chocolate, xylitol—that's in sugar-free gum—grapes, and onions. And consider houseplants and flowers. I just treated a cat last week that got into Easter lilies. Those can be deadly to cats.

Michael: What should someone do if they suspect their pet has been poisoned?

Dr. Nickisch: Call us immediately, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. And this is crucial: do NOT induce vomiting unless we specifically tell you to. Some toxins cause more damage coming back up.

Michael: That's good to know. Now, let's talk about something I never really thought about until Oliver, dental care. How important is this really?

Dr. Nickisch: Michael, this might shock you, but nearly 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have dental disease by age three. It's not just bad breath. We're talking pain, infections, and bacteria that can actually damage the heart and kidneys.

Michael: Wow, I had no idea it was that serious. What should owners be doing?

Dr. Nickisch: First, a high-quality pet food diet can actually reduce tartar build-up. Some pets will allow owners to brush their teeth, but be sure to use pet-safe toothpaste. Provide dental chews. Look for VOHC-approved products. And keep up with professional cleanings as we recommend.

Michael: Let's talk about parasites. Living in suburbia, I worry about ticks and fleas. How big of a concern is this?

Dr. Nickisch: Parasites aren't just annoying, Michael. They transmit serious diseases—Lyme Disease and Heartworm Disease. Intestinal parasites like roundworms can actually be transmitted to people from pets! We recommend year-round prevention with vet-approved products. And even indoor pets are at risk for heartworm and parasites. Parasite eggs can be carried indoors on your shoes, and mosquitoes carrying disease can fly right through your front door.

Michael: What about checking for these parasites?

Dr. Nickisch: Always check for ticks after outdoor adventures, and we recommend regular fecal tests to catch intestinal parasites early.

Michael: Oliver is definitely a high-energy dog. How important is exercise and mental stimulation?

Dr. Nickisch: Extremely important. Bored, under-exercised pets often develop behavioral issues, destructive chewing, excessive barking, or obesity-related diseases. Dogs need daily walks, puzzle toys, fetch, maybe agility training. For cats, interactive toys, climbing trees, laser pointers work great. Even small animals like rabbits and birds need enrichment.

Michael: How often should I be bringing in Oliver in for check-ups?

Dr. Nickisch: Annual visits are essential, biyearly for senior pets. Many pets hide illness until it's advanced, so these wellness exams catch problems early. During these visits, we check weight, body condition, dental health, heart and lung function, and bloodwork when needed. It saves money and suffering in the long run.

Michael: What about making our home safe? Any common dangers I should know about?

Dr. Nickisch: Electrical cords, small objects that pets can swallow. Cats especially love hair ties and rubber bands. Secure your trash cans because pets raid them for dangerous scraps. Use pet gates to block unsafe areas. Remember, most accidents happen when pets actually leave the safety of home, so always keep them on a leash or in carriers on outings.

Michael: I keep meaning to ask about spaying and neutering. Beyond population control, are there real health benefits?

Dr. Nickisch: Absolutely. Spaying and neutering reduce certain cancer risks and behavioral problems significantly. For cats, we can do this as early as eight weeks of age and prefer it by six months. For dogs, it's typically at 6-12 months depending on the breed. Talk to your vet about the best timing for your pet!

Michael: What are the warning signs that would send me straight to the emergency vet?

Dr. Nickisch: Difficulty breathing, seizures, sudden collapse—these are all immediate emergencies. Don't wait. Also watch for a bloated abdomen, especially in dogs. That could be Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), which is life-threatening. And straining to urinate is deadly, particularly in male cats.

Michael: With winter coming, what should I know about travel and outdoor safety?

Dr. Nickisch: Always use a secure carrier or harness in the car. Never let pets roam freely. Get Oliver microchipped because collars can fall off. Be mindful of extreme temperatures. Ice and salt can damage paws, and cars lose heat quickly in freezing weather. Even a few minutes of exposure to extreme cold can be dangerous.

Michael: If you had to give me one piece of advice as Oliver's owner, what would it be?

Dr. Nickisch: Prevention is everything, Michael. Most of the crises we see are completely preventable with proper care and awareness. When in doubt, call us. We'd rather have you ask what you think might be a silly question than deal with an emergency that could have been avoided.

Michael: That's reassuring to hear. Any final thoughts?

Dr. Nickisch: An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure, especially with our beloved pets. The stress and expense of emergency visits can usually be avoided with good preventive care. Build a relationship with your veterinarian and keep up with regular care. It gives pets like Oliver the best chance at a long, happy life.

Michael: Thank you so much. This has been incredibly helpful, and I feel much more confident about taking care of Oliver properly.
