When Suze Orman went viral for saying you need at least $5 million to retire safely — and even more if you want to feel “secure” — the internet erupted. For many Americans, that number sounds not only unrealistic but impossible.

Here’s the truth: You probably don’t need anywhere near $5 million to retire comfortably. What you do need is a clearer picture of your spending, the risks of outliving your savings and a knowledge of how retirement income actually works.

We ran the numbers behind Orman’s claim for what most retirees actually need. And we found a more realistic way to calculate your own retirement number without panic.

Why Orman’s $5 million target misses the mark

Orman bases her numbers on legitimate concerns — longevity risk, inflation and rising healthcare costs. But her $5 million figure assumes a level of spending, risk tolerance and lifestyle that doesn’t reflect most retirees’ reality.

The typical household of ages 65 or older spends around $65,000 a year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Using a conservative 3.5% withdrawal rate, you’d need roughly $1.7 million in savings to sustain that spending level. Even accounting for rising prices or unexpected expenses, the gap between $1.7 million and $5 million is massive.

Orman’s bigger flaw: assuming retirees fund their lifestyle through investment withdrawals alone. In reality, Social Security covers a substantial portion of expenses for millions of households.

The average retired couple receives more than $45,000 a year in combined Social Security benefits. That alone cuts required savings by hundreds of thousands — sometimes more than a million. Add in pensions, part-time work, rental income or home equity, and the $5 million target is even more disconnected from actual retirement needs.

How to calculate what you actually need

Good financial advisors and financial planners rarely use universal numbers like $5 million. Instead, they recommend a simple process that produces a personalized — and often much smaller — savings goal. They work backward from three key factors: your expected spending, your guaranteed income and your withdrawal rate.

3. Apply a withdrawal rate

Say you expect to spend $60,000 a year and receive $48,000 from Social Security. Your portfolio only needs to generate $12,000 a year. At a 3.5% withdrawal rate, that’s roughly $343,000 in savings.

Even with $80,000 in annual spending with $48,000 from Social Security, you’d need $914,000 at a 3.5% rate. That’s nowhere near $5 million.

Orman’s number only makes sense for early retirees — that is, before Social Security kicks in — those planning for significant long-term-care costs or high spenders with luxury lifestyles.

For most of us? The actual number is a fraction of her estimate.

All that said, there are situations when you genuinely need over seven figures to retire well:

Early retirement. Retiring before 65 means covering a decade or more without Social Security or Medicare. Health care can cost $15,000 to $15,000 a year per person on the private market.
High-cost cities. Living in San Francisco or New York City can double housing and living expenses compared to national averages.
Significant healthcare needs. Long-term care can cost $95,000 or more, depending on where you live and how much care you need. Planning for years of assisted living or memory care justifies higher savings.
Supporting family or a large inheritance. Helping out adult children, caring for aging parents or leaving substantial estates all demand additional savings beyond your typical needs.

A realistic retirement plan has many moving parts, and most retirees don’t face all these circumstances at once. The typical 65-year-old with a paid-off mortgage, moderate spending and Social Security benefits need far less than $5 million.

Why the $5 million myth feels so convincing

Orman’s claim isn’t grounded in typical retirement spending, but it taps into three deep financial anxieties that can push people toward extreme retirement targets.

Fear 1: Outliving your money

The thought of outliving your savings is frightening. But this risk is manageable if you use conservative withdrawal strategies, diversify your portfolio for growth and delay Social Security for higher lifetime benefits. You don’t need $5 million to avoid running out — you need a sustainable drawdown strategy.

Fear 2: Health care will bankrupt you

Medical expenses spike in retirement, and one long-term-care stay can drain your savings. But insurance is designed to address catastrophic what-ifs: Medicare covers most routine care, supplemental insurance covers gaps and long-term care insurance protects against extended nursing home care.

Planning for healthcare doesn’t mean oversaving millions “just in case.” It means buying the coverage you’ll need.

Fear 3: “Never enough” syndrome

Viral advice and financial media thrives on worst-case scenarios. “What if the market crashes the year you retire?” “What if Social Security runs out of money?” “What if you need 24/7 care for decades?”

These hypothetical situations stack hypothetical disasters until any number under $5 million feels woefully off track.

Most retirees don’t face simultaneous market crashes, maximum care costs and 40-year retirements. Sure, it’s possible. But plan for realistic scenarios instead.

Stop planning for worst-case scenarios. Start planning for your actual life.

Start by imagining your day-to-day retirement life:

Where will you live? Will you age in place at home, rent a smaller place, move to a lower-cost city (or a retiree-friendly country? Maybe retire to a cruise ship?
How will you spend your days? Travel twice a year, or see the country from an RV? Golf or bowl weekly?
Will you work a little for income? Maybe a part-time gig or side hustle?
What fixed costs will you have? Housing, car insurance, utilities?

Then run the math:

Estimate your annual spending based on your needs
Subtract your guaranteed income — Social Security, pensions and other income
Divide the gap by 3.5% to find the savings you’ll need

Remember: Retirement is flexible. Your spending isn’t fixed. Plan for surprises in your first year of retirement, and adjust as your circumstances change — just as you do now.

A comfortable retirement doesn’t hinge on hitting some money guru’s exact number — and seldom requires $5 million to get there.
