A community search from Virginia to North Carolina is underway.

Francine — an iconic Richmond cat who lives at the West Broad Street Lowe’s — has gone missing.

According to a social media post, an employee said the last time that Francine had been seen in the store was on Sept. 18.

VPM News received this statement from a Lowe’s Home Improvement spokesperson Sunday night: “We are pet lovers at Lowe's, and Francine holds a special place in our hearts. She is a local celebrity in Richmond and dearly loved by everyone in the community, from our customers to our store associates.”

The spokesperson said that the Lowe’s team is “grateful for the outpouring of support” and noted that Francine was microchipped “to help in case of a situation like this.”

Lowe’s wants to see its “beloved Francine” back in the store, and the spokesperson thanked the community for “keeping an eye out.”

A Richmond Lowe’s employee, who did not wish to be identified, said the workers at the store are just as upset as the community over her disappearance.

A @wheresfrancine Instagram account was set up to share up-to-date information about the search for her. That Instagram account is part of a concerted social media effort underway to help locate Francine, including a spreadsheet of resources and information to help spread the word.

VPM News was also able to get in contact with the people behind the Instagram account, who did not want to be identified. They said that they “knew once the community found out, people would rally to find her.”

They asked the community not to flood the West Broad Lowe’s with calls or berate employees: “Our main focus is locating Francine and bringing her home safely.”

Since news of her disappearance first broke, people have come forward to shed some light into how she might have slipped away.

According to social media posts, workers at Lowe’s reviewed security footage and found that she walked onto a freight truck that was in the store’s receiving area, headed for a distribution center in Garysburg, N.C.

On Sunday, the people behind the @wheresfrancine account were able to get in contact with a manager at the Lowe’s distribution center over the phone, where it was confirmed that a cat was seen on an incoming trailer to the facility sometime over the weekend of Sept. 20.

Since then, there have been no sightings, and the manager at the facility was unaware that Francine was even missing. It has not been confirmed whether the cat seen in the trailer was Francine.

Pictures and missing posters have been shared with the manager, who said he would share them with other employees to raise awareness.

On Monday, a group of volunteers who call themselves Task Force Francine and the Richmond SPCA traveled to Garysburg to try and look for Francine, but were unable to search through the property. They brought Francine’s blanket to help aid local animal control officers in their search.
