Once you choose an industry and a niche, then you can further specialize with the type of content you write such as blog posts, buyer guides, product reviews, personal essays, case studies, etc.

Below are five more freelance writing niches that are popular for 2022 and beyond.

Food & Wine

Here’s an industry that will never go out of style. If you have an interest in food and/or beverages, you can almost always find writing gigs if you know where to look. Breaking into the traditional market can be a tad more difficult so build an online portfolio that shines before you pitch. Niche down and make a name for yourself in an area where you have both interest and expertise. Most recent trends include non-alcoholic beverages, gluten-free foods, teas, and coffee.

Where to Look: travel magazines, restaurant and beverage startup companies, food wholesale companies, local food or beverage restaurants, trade magazines, catering companies, etc.

Beauty

With consumer spending on the rise and the total global beauty industry spending expected to surpass $700 billion by 2025, this is definitely a profitable niche for 2022. The industry encompasses a wide range of products and techniques. For best results, consider trends such as organic beauty products, aromas and wellness, beauty snacking (home micro treatments), and skincare, especially for tweens and teens or elderly.

Where to Look: beauty magazines and publications, beauty and skincare brands, beauty supply stores, and more will all need content that can attract potential customers in 2022 and the future.

Tech

An industry that is both fast growing and always in demand, technology writers can command some of the higher rates in the business. If you can write content for SaaS (Software as a Service) companies, you’ll be in great demand.

Where to Look: SaaS companies like Hubspot, Convertkit, MailChimp, and Adobe are always looking for valuable content to help attract potential customers. Tech magazines and websites such as Mashable, PC Gamer, WIRED, and others. Recently, I’ve seen more niche gurus advertising for freelance writers so chances are the tech geeks you follow need valuable content and just might be looking for your expertise!

Parenting

If there’s a niche that will always be profitable, it’s parenting. Parents are always looking for advice, product reviews, brand recommendations, and step-by-step guides on how to do parenting better. You can niche even further around a specific issue many parents face such as bullying, school issues, parenting hacks, toy organization, room decor, or even preparing for an empty nest.

Where to Look: Seek out parenting magazines and publications, brands, toy companies, baby product companies, children’s furniture companies, and even survival or outdoor companies, and travel agencies. Parenting encompasses everything starting with fertility and pregnancy through teens and young adults.

Real Estate

This is a great niche industry because real estate isn’t going anywhere. Demand will likely be high for the next ten years or more. There are so many different sub-niches within real estate, even if one become less profitable or demand decreases, a slight shift in your skills and focus can have you in demand again.

Where to Look: Depending on your experience and interest, you can pitch companies that cater to home buyers, real estate agents, or investors. There’s also sub-niches around home rental, home renovation, real estate law, and even vacation rentals.
