A new luxury glamping experience is coming to the world’s largest salt flat, and it’s set to offer guests the chance to stay in a glamorous Airstream underneath an endless blanket of stars.
A&K Sanctuary, the boutique luxury lodge, camp, and riverboat arm of Abercrombie & Kent, plans to open Samkani Camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027. The camp will feature five architect-designed Airstream suites with plush, stylish interiors and hints of blue Bolivian marble. A sixth Airstream will serve as a cozy lounge and dining area.
Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is one of the South American country’s top destinations, but accommodations there are scarce. A more than 4,000-square-mile salt flat in southwestern Bolivia near the crest of the Andes Mountains, it sits far from urban life.
There are no landmarks, trees, or skyscrapers to be found. Instead, it is a place where nature reigns supreme, once home to a collection of vast lakes that dried up, leaving behind an eight-meter-thick layer of salt. During the day, the land looks like a mosaic patchwork of gleaming white tiles.

As the stars emerge at night, the ground seems to transform into a vast mirror reflecting a sky filled with stars.
Set about 15 miles away from everything, A&K’s camp will be positioned to offer a level of solitude that can be hard to attain nowadays. Still, it will be equipped to provide guests with all the comforts of a five-star hotel.
Each suite comes complete with a private guide and driver along with access to more than 30 excursion options, including several that will be offered exclusively to A&K Sanctuary guests. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore hidden islands, volcanic caves, and idyllic lagoons, stargaze under some of the clearest and darkest skies in the Southern Hemisphere, or sip cocktails underneath the magnificent Milky Way. Wildlife is rare in this high-altitude spot, but do keep an eye out for flamingos.
These Airstreams are designed to be self-sufficient and have a minimal impact on the environment. Metal exteriors are meant to mirror the salt and sky, allowing the camp to almost fade into the landscape. The camp’s name, Samkani, means “the one who dreams” in the language of Bolivia’s indigenous Aymara community.
Bookings aren’t yet open, but the camp will be available as part of both A&K Tailormade journeys and small group journeys. Guests can register their interest in staying on the camp’s website.
