Colin Allred Amasses $10 Million War Chest to Take on Ted Cruz

Representative Colin Allred, D-TX, speaks in front of the US Supreme Court during an event to call for the protection of affordable healthcare for those with preexisting conditions in Washington, DC on April 2, 2019.

Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, seeking to flip a Senate seat in Texas, will report having $10 million cash on hand entering 2024.

Allred, a Dallas-area congressman, announced raising $4.8 million in the final quarter of 2023, spanning October through the end of December.

The Allred campaign says it has raised $18.3 million since he launched his campaign in May. Last quarter, the average donation was $31.62, and 94% of donations were under $100. Allred raised $6.2 million in the second quarter of the year and $4.7 million in the third quarter.

“Texas is ready to move past Ted Cruz’s culture wars and division, and with less than a year until the election, we are confident we will have the resources to send Cruz packing," said Allred campaign manager Paige Hutchinson.

Cruz is a top target for Democrats this year. He raised $5.5 million across three fundraising committees during the last quarter of 2023 and had $7.3 million cash on hand, according to Fox News.

Cruz narrowly defeated former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke in 2018 by 2.6 percentage points, and Democrats believe Cruz is vulnerable again. But Democrats haven't won statewide in Texas on the presidential level since 1976, and former Gov. Ann Richards was the last Texas Democrat to win statewide back in 1994.

While Texas seems enticing for Democrats, they have their hands full defending a challenging national map.

The party will have to defend two seats in red states — Ohio and Montana — while also defending seats in traditional battleground states like Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
