What Others Have Said

“In my mind, he’s without question the most important reporter working the music space in the past 15 years… his later reporting, often about the abuse of power by individuals and organizations, shifted culture.”

— Mark Richardson, Former Editor-in-Chief, Pitchfork, 2024 · source

“There are very few people in this business who can justifiably claim to be Music Journalists. I’m not one. I’m a critic who blogs. But @MarcHogan? That is a Music Journalist of the highest possible caliber.”

— Tom Breihan, Senior Editor, Stereogum; former Pitchfork staff, 2024 · source

"Pitchfork stuck to its all-music program but made an effort to conceive and cover legitimate music-under-Trump stories, the bailiwick of reviewer-turned-staff-writer Marc Hogan, an experienced investigative reporter with a grasp of basic political reality. In the first three months of 2017, Hogan filed compact, meaty features on alt-rockers campaigning to save their ACA healthcare, Republican hostility to the National Endowment for the Arts, Muslim musicians beset by ICE goons, the mini-furor over South by Southwest’s immigration guidelines, and the ties between Neil Gorsuch and Coachella-owner Philip Anschutz. I say give Hogan a column that would spur him to dig up as much such stuff as he can."

— Robert Christgau, Paris Review, 2017 · source

“The only good thing about it, as Marc Hogan wrote in Spin, was the chance that her devilish song might make ‘Bill Donohue’s head spin while spewing green vomit.’”

— Maureen Dowd, The New York Times, 2012 · source

“Part of what changed my mind was a long essay on the Web site Pitchfork. In that essay, Marc Hogan noted the cassette’s stunning fall from prominence… and declared that a ‘netroots resurgence’ is fueling a cassette ‘comeback.’”

— Rob Walker, The New York Times Magazine, 2010 · source

“In a current review of ‘Love Kraft,’ by the Super Furry Animals, the writer, Marc Hogan, gives the record an 8.5—so precise, those rockists—and in his rave goes over the top and stays there to very nice effect.”

— David Carr, The New York Times, 2005 · source
