Jackson and Sheila Rathbone as STARMOTHER pic by Danin Jacquay

Jackson Rathbone has been putting in plenty of work behind the scenes for STARMOTHER, but he’s just as eager to get back in front of an audience. Between making music and filming videos with his wife, the Twilight star has taken on everything from producing to hauling equipment for their independent project. Having previously toured North America and Europe with 100 Monkeys, he knows what it takes to bring those songs to the stage, and STARMOTHER listeners have given him something to look forward to.

His latest project, STARMOTHER, brings that experience into a partnership with his wife, who serves as the duo’s lead singer. The pair met while performing with their respective bands, although getting her behind the microphone for this collaboration took considerably longer. “It’s taken me 15 years to get her to sing lead for me,” Rathbone told Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at FanX in Salt Lake City. Now that they’re making music together, their plans extend beyond the recording studio.

Rathbone confirmed that STARMOTHER intends to tour, with an approach that could give listeners a direct influence on where the band performs. The duo is independently handling its releases and music videos while assembling a team, so there isn’t a confirmed itinerary yet. However, he hopes to use Spotify’s listener data to identify the places where their music is finding an audience. “With Spotify, you can see what regions are playing you the most,” he explained. “We can go to your hometown and then play there. So that’s hopefully kind of how we’re looking at this tour.”

STARMOTHER’s First Three Singles Tell a Connected Story

There’s also more for listeners to discover before those shows take shape. STARMOTHER's latest single, "Hesitation," was released on October 2, leaning further into the band’s dance and disco influences. Its accompanying video was expected to follow the single, with the same team returning from the “Karate” production. Those videos are part of a larger idea: “We actually made the first three singles a trilogy. So there’s a little bit of a through line through all of them.” Rathbone explained that he and his wife have imagined a fictional history for STARMOTHER, giving their videos a story to explore alongside the music. Their upcoming album, Disco Punk Is Dead, contains approximately 14 tracks, including an introductory piece and a closing song called “Idiot” that tells the band’s story. He also described the record as a journey through punk’s history, drawing on his interest in its early influences while considering where the genre could go next.

For now, the couple is doing much of the work required to bring that vision to life themselves. Rathbone’s music video duties include acting, producing, moving lights, and hauling equipment, while his wife handles catering. That hands-on approach also shapes the videos themselves, which he wants to feel raw and fun to watch. With new music building out STARMOTHER’s world and touring firmly on his wish list, listeners may eventually get the chance to experience that work a little closer to home.
