This collection includes an article I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote about a photo exhibit (by Afghan artist Zalmai) on the trafficking of Afghan migrants through Greece as well as another article I wrote about an event I facilitated for Duke University students on an Afghan teen's rough journey from his country to the UK in the 2000s as a refugee (immortalized in his book "The Lightless Sky"). This collection also includes two articles I wrote for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting 'Balkan Crisis Report' about  women being trafficked through the Balkans for sex.

I (Julie Poucher Harbin) worked as a contributing correspondent for Religion News Service from May 2015-July 2016 while still employed by the Duke Islamic Studies Center. I wrote eight articles on U.S. Muslim topics for the RNS website, most of which were cross-posted by prominent outlets such as The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, National Catholic Reporter, Sojourners, Deseret News, and other RNS subscribers. Two articles were part of a Google.org grant-funded series aimed at promoting religious tolerance and combating online hate speech. My article ‘Hollywood Reworks Muslim Stereotypes’ was cited in the book ‘Arab Americans in Film: From Hollywood and Egyptian Stereotypes to Self-Representation’ (Syracuse University Press, 2020) and in the CQ Press article ‘Diversity in Hollywood: Are women and minorities treated fairly?’

The ISLAMiCommentary & TIRN websites (with their individual blogs) were the online homes of the Carnegie Corporation of New York-supported Transcultural Islam Project — a multi-year initiative (2012-2016) led by the Duke Islamic Studies Center (DISC) at Duke University in collaboration with the UNC-Chapel Hill Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations and initially the Oxford (University) Centre for Islamic Studies. From January 2012-July 2016 I (Julie Poucher Harbin) was chief and sole web content manager/managing editor for both of these sites, sole writer & editor of landing page content, chief writer, and sole editor of the articles published on the sites. I also served as a communications & media relations specialist for both the project and DISC, worked as an associate project manager for the project, and led an annual op-ed writing seminar class for Duke and UNC grad students enrolled in the joint Duke-UNC Middle East Graduate Practicum course. For the latter, I edited and workshopped student pieces for publication on the ISLAMiCommentary Blog and with other media outlets (2013-2016). The sites were archived by the university in July 2016). The websites/blogs/articles are currently publicly accessible via the Wayback Machine. [ISLAMiCommentary: A Forum for Public Scholarship) : https://web.archive.org/web/20170213210533/https://islamicommentary.org/]

NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO ‘ALL THINGS CONSIDERED’ | EDITORIAL ASSISTANT & RESEARCHER (STAFF ROLE) |
WASHINGTON, DC | FEBRUARY 2000 – JULY 2000 | Under the direction of producer Art Silverman, I  (Julie Poucher Harbin) I conducted extensive research, proposed story ideas, and followed through with production assistance for the show’s Pew Charitable Trusts-funded Changing Face of America radio series. This included compiling info sheets and arranging interviews for the correspondents’ pieces — Margot Adler in Hinesburg, Vermont, John Burnett in Austin, Texas,  John McChesney in rural Missouri, Linda Wertheimer in Broward County, Florida, and Vertamae Grosvenor in the South Carolina Sea Islands (whom I also supported in the field) —
— exploring the impact of, and community responses to, technological advances, corporate expansion, and suburban sprawl at the dawn of the new Millenium.

Below are summaries of radio pieces appearing on various versions of the NPR website. Unfortunately, the links to the audio appear to be broken.

This collection includes journalistic articles that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote and co-wrote for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting 'Balkan Crisis Report' and edited for IWPR's 'Afghan Recovery Report;' wrote for International Medical Corps, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and The World Bank; and edited for the Washington, DC-based Institute for Social Policy and Understanding think-tank as part of a Duke Islamic Studies Center-associated project.

The following collection includes articles that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) edited — while I was the editor of ISLAMiCommentary (associated with the Transcultural Islam Project at Duke Islamic Studies Center) — in collaboration with Institute for Social Policy and Understanding editors. These topics were conceived of by ISLAMiCommentary and the ISPU.

This collection includes articles I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting 'Balkan Crisis Report' as a reporter & journalism adviser, and articles I edited as a journalism coach & editor for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting 'Afghan Recovery Report' (*marked as 'edited'). Citations are also included.

IWPR 'BALKAN CRISIS REPORT' | SARAJEVO, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA; ZAGREB, CROATIA; BELGRADE, SERBIA; VIENNA, AUSTRIA | JANUARY 2001 – APRIL 2003 | Collaborated with local & regional reporters in The Balkans on select investigative pieces — enhancing post-civil-war journalistic capacity in the region — and did solo field reporting. Covered post-civil-war politics (women and religious leaders in the 2002 parliamentary elections), ethno-religious tensions (inc. a multi-ethnic football team, a diverse youth group in a tourist town, foreign-funded mosques), social issues (inc. drug addiction, domestic violence, brain drain), human trafficking, UN governance, European media aid & development, and Sarajevo's Olympics bid. Also, attended news briefings in Sarajevo by NATO-SFOR, the OSCE, UNHCR, and OHR. Two articles were cross-published ("The Fall of OBN" by a Bosnian newsmagazine and "Bosnia: UN Handover Causes Concern" by the UN’s ReliefWeb outlet) and three were cited ("Multi-ethnic Football Kicks Off" by The Guardian, "German Media Dominates the Balkans" by the OSCE, and "Thousands of Women Lured into Bosnia Brothels" by the International Crisis Group)

'AFGHAN RECOVERY REPORT' | KABUL, AFGHANISTAN | JULY 2004 – JANUARY 2005 |  I mentored Afghan trainee journalists on best-practices for sourcing, how to construct a workable story plan, and tips on UK/US-style article structure and tone, then edited their articles, which covered critical post-conflict issues such as sanitation and disease, divorce, women’s rights, mental health, refugee concerns, and soldier demobilization.
NOTABLY:  I successfully persuaded a staff of mainly male journalists with little journalism experience, limited English language skills, and no previous experience with a female manager, to learn and embrace an American reporting style that included unbiased, multi-dimensional and interactive reporting.  And, I convinced a reporter to not only analyze a report about the waste management system in Kabul and conduct the appropriate interviews, but to travel for a day on a Kabul garbage truck to gain first-hand  knowledge to report his story— journalism atypical of Afghanistan.

This collection includes Q & As I (Julie Poucher Harbin) conducted for Duke Cancer Institute and for ISLAMiCommentary (a Duke Islamic Studies Center Transcultural Islam Project website).

From February 1993 through March 1994 I (Julie Poucher) was a staff reporter and crime columnist for English-language news weekly "The Moscow Tribune," published by Anthony Louis (now deceased) in Moscow, Russia. I covered socioeconomic & political change, security, and barrier-breaking cultural moments in post-Soviet Russia — from a communist and nationalist coup, protests in the streets, ‘New Russia’ party politics, and state separation moves in the Baltics and Russian Far East, to U.S. & Japan foreign aid, the Kremlin’s ecological agenda, and organized crime, to policing in the capitol, the art scene, and the arrival of 'Estée Lauder', a second McDonalds, Salt-N-Pepa, Michael Jackson, and much more.
MORE DETAIL:
• I covered the October 1993 coup, including the role of prominent communist and nationalist figures in that coup and Russia’s first free parliamentary elections (My election reporting was cited in the East European Quarterly/Summer 1996 piece ‘The Russian Parliamentary Elections of 1993: A Quasi-Historical Interpretation in Light of the 1995 Elections')
• I interviewed Russian Pres. Yeltsin's Chief Ecology Advisor Alexei Yablokov at the Kremlin about national environmental priorities
• I wrote a weekly crime column, which was widely read by the expatriate community and referenced in U.S. Embassy security briefings
•  I wrote a series of articles from Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East on organized crime, debates over Russia separation, and Japanese Red Cross medical aid to orphans, maternity hospitals, and mothers in prison with their babies
• I reported on the first post-Soviet rock concerts featuring U.S. musicians, including Salt-N-Pepa (whom I interviewed in St. Petersburg) and Michael Jackson (whom I didn't interview, but about whom I did speak with Russian special forces regarding what to expect vis a vis his popularity)
•  I collaborated with local journalists (non-native English speakers) to enhance storytelling about the new arts scene in Russia, focusing on Moscow and St. Petersburg

Since this was "pre-internet" all of my clips are newspaper clips, which I am in the process of uploading to this collection. [I left The Moscow Tribune in March 1994 to join the NBC News Moscow bureau as an assignment editor and field producer, where I stayed until November 1995]

These are news and event announcements that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote and disseminated — while I worked at Duke Cancer Institute —in coordination with major oncology nonprofits, academic and clinical associations, Pharma companies, government agencies, scientific journals and trades, and other university-based cancer centers.

This collection primarily includes articles I (Julie Poucher Harbin) I wrote and/or curated and edited for the Carnegie Corporation of New York-funded Transcultural Islam Project websites — ISLAMiCommentary & TIRN. The latter was a project I managed at the Duke University Islamic Studies Center (2012-2016). Some of the articles were mirrored on Professor Juan Cole's Informed Comment blog. The main countries covered in this region included China, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, India, and Asia more broadly. (Pakistan & Afghanistan are in a separate collection in my portfolio)

This collection includes articles & press releases I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote for ISLAMiCommentary and Duke Today connected to the international workshop/conference 'Islamic Institutions of Higher Learning in Africa: Their History, Mission and Role in Regional Development' held at Duke in October 2013 and co-sponsored by  Duke Islamic Studies Center and ISLAMiCommentary among others.

This Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies Annual Conference — “The Art (s) of Revolution” — featured artists from Baghdad, Libya, Turkey, Qatar, and Bahrain. [I (Julie Poucher Harbin) either wrote or curated/edited all the articles in this collection for ISLAMiCommentary, part of the Transcultural Islam Project at Duke Islamic Studies Center]

This collection includes articles I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote about Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk for ISLAMiCommentary, including a press release and wrap story on Pamuk's visit to Duke in 2015 and an article about the 2013 release of a book on Pamuk by Duke professor Erdağ Göknar titled 'Orhan Pamuk, Secularism and Blasphemy: The Politics of the Turkish Novel.'  (Göknar is well known for his 2001 translation (into English) of Pamuk's Nobel Prize winning novel 'My Name is Red.') Also included in this collection is a piece I curated/edited written by
Annabel Jane Wharton about Pamuk's Museum of Innocence in Istanbul)

A national conference on "The Legacy of Malcolm X: Afro-American Visionary, Muslim Activist" was held at Duke on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. Supported, in part, by the Transcultural Islam Project (managed by the Duke Islamic Studies Center), the conference was co-organized by Duke Islamic Studies Center director Omid Safi, UNC-Chapel Hill Islamic Studies professor Juliane Hammer, and African & African American Studies professor and host of 'Left of Black' Mark Anthony Neal. Here are some of the writeups and videos that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) was involved with.

This collection includes a writeup on the original release of the WRAL documentary 'Faith, Fear & Freedom' about North Carolina's growing Muslim population (featuring Duke Islamic Studies Center faculty), as well as a press release and wrap article on an ISLAMiCommentary event that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) conceptualized, organized, and covered, featuring a public screening of the documentary + panel discussion.

This collection includes articles that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote or curated/edited involving Europe and Canada.

Here are my (Julie Poucher Harbin) contributions/reporting to the Trinity University school newspaper (The Trinitonian) and yearbook (The Mirage) while I was a student there from 1988 to 1992. For The Trinitonian I covered campus lectures on plate tectonics, overpopulation, globalization, and the concept of evil; campus politics & tech; and city events, including the rodeo (inc. cowboy tropes) and the Grand Prix. I wrote the opening nine pages of the 1990-91 yearbook 'The Mirage,' which covered the Gulf War and its impact on campus, including opinion surveys, peace protests on campus and the state capitol, and the war’s effect on the Muslim community.

These are Africa-centric articles that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote or curated/edited for the ISLAMiCommentary and TIRN websites, which were affiliated with the Duke Islamic Studies Center-managed Transcultural Islam Project.

This collection includes awards, citations, and mirroring of my (Julie Poucher Harbin) written work and reporting for Religion News Service, ISLAMiCommentary, IWPR Balkan Crisis Report, and San Diego Business Journal; citations and mirroring of my edited work for ISLAMiCommentary; and special awards bestowed for my reporting. This also includes lists of team members that include my name, including in newspaper mastheads and news agency webpages (The Moscow Tribune, Religion News Service, Sojourners), the Congressional Record (NBC news staff list), and the Duke University School of Medicine website, and a list of my articles on the Duke Health Referring Physicians website.

The status of LGBTQ rights in the Muslim world today is perplexing given that Islamic history is characterized by its relative tolerance of sexual diversity and same-sex desire.
