BreakThroughs is a magazine published by Duke Cancer Institute Development. I (Julie Poucher Harbin) contributed several pieces to BreakThroughs, which was edited by Angela Spivey.

This collection includes an article I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote about a photo exhibit (by Afghan artist Zalmai) on the trafficking of Afghan migrants through Greece as well as another article I wrote about an event I facilitated for Duke University students on an Afghan teen's rough journey from his country to the UK in the 2000s as a refugee (immortalized in his book "The Lightless Sky"). This collection also includes two articles I wrote for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting 'Balkan Crisis Report' about  women being trafficked through the Balkans for sex.

This is a collection of some articles that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) have written for Duke Cancer Institute about faculty research in the Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology —  including precision cancer medicine research (genetic and genomic) and patients impacted by this research. 


"Created to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Cancer Act of 1971, the Cancer History Project is a free historical resource that places—in perpetuity—a vast, expertly curated collection of primary sources and authoritative interpretations within easy reach of researchers, medical professionals, students, policy-makers, and patients. The CHP is a new way of preserving history: collaboratively curated by the institutions and people who shaped it. The Project draws on the expertise of an editorial board of physicians, scientists, advocates, and communicators and is operated by The Cancer Letter, the longest-running oncology news publication." I (Julie Poucher Harbin) was responsible for setting up the portal and uploading most of the Duke Cancer Institute content to the portal. 


My (Julie Poucher Harbin) active communications role at the Duke Islamic Studies Center — which was supported, in part,  by the Carnegie Corporation of New York as part of the Transcultural Islam Project —  included writing press releases and newstips for Duke Today/Duke Central Communications Team distribution and attending weekly university-wide rapid response meetings. I also wrote a few 'press releases'  for Duke Cancer Institute, which were not distributed directly to the press, but shared broadly on social media and with our extra-institutional partners (trades, professional  associations, other universities), various Duke departments and the Duke community, and the Duke 100 website calendar (one of these).

From February 1993 through March 1994 I (Julie Poucher) was a staff reporter for English-language weekly "The Moscow Tribune" (published by Anthony Louis in Moscow, Russia) covering nationalist politics, organized crime, culture, and business. Since this was "pre-internet" all of my clips are newspaper clips, which I am in the process of uploading to this collection. [After the Tribune, I joined the NBC News Moscow bureau as an assignment editor and field producer in March 1994 where I stayed until November 1995]


These are news and event announcements that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote and disseminated — while I worked at Duke Cancer Institute —in coordination with major oncology nonprofits, academic and clinical associations, Pharma companies, government agencies, scientific journals and trades, and other university-based cancer centers.

This collection includes articles I (Julie Poucher Harbin) wrote about Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk for ISLAMiCommentary, including a press release and wrap story on Pamuk's visit to Duke in 2015 and an article about the 2013 release of a book on Pamuk by Duke professor Erdağ Göknar titled 'Orhan Pamuk, Secularism and Blasphemy: The Politics of the Turkish Novel.'  (Göknar is well known for his 2001 translation (into English) of Pamuk's Nobel Prize winning novel 'My Name is Red.') A national conference on "The Legacy of Malcolm X: Afro-American Visionary, Muslim Activist" was held at Duke on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. Supported, in part, by the Transcultural Islam Project (managed by the Duke Islamic Studies Center), the conference was co-organized by Duke Islamic Studies Center director Omid Safi, UNC-Chapel Hill Islamic Studies professor Juliane Hammer, and African & African American Studies professor and host of 'Left of Black' Mark Anthony Neal. Here are some of the writeups and videos that I (Julie Poucher Harbin) was involved with.
