Home buying is at its peak in spring, making it the perfect season for a lounge room refresh.

Spring is not just a season; it’s a feeling of renewal and possibility.

As the flowers bloom, so too does the housing market, with 2.4 million realestate.com.au users intending to move over the next year – with a peak of homebuyers over spring.

Whether your lounge room is a place entertain friends, or have a family movie night, invest in key pieces to make it comfy.

This makes it the perfect season to transform the core space that brings people together – the lounge room.

While upgrades can sometimes be costly or require sacrifices on quality, a room makeover doesn’t mean you need to compromise on luxury.

Because really, you can take your lounge room from drab to fab with a few key investment pieces and simple tweaks to suit your lifestyle.

Whether you’re selling, settling into a new space, or simply refreshing your current one, our team has shared these 5 tips to help you transform your lounge room into a stylish and functional spring retreat.

Affordable luxury: Tips on how to upgrade your lounge room

1. Invest in a quality sofa

The sofa is the heart of your lounge room – and for many people, the home – so creating a space of harmony and relaxation is key.

This is where you’ll settle in for long phone calls with friends, cosy up for movie nights, or play on the floor with your kids.

When choosing a sofa, pick one that will compliment your lifestyle.

Here’s what to consider:

Quality: Prioritise quality materials and craftsmanship for your sofa that will last the test of time. Also look for a piece that makes a stylish statement while also being functional for your home needs.

Comfort: A well-made sofa should offer comfort and support, with ample cushioning and a sturdy frame to withstand daily use for a range of different people, guests, children, and even pets.

Lifestyle: Not all sofas are created equal, so think about the needs of your household when choosing.

If you entertain guests often, a sofa with all the bells and whistles – recliners, cup holders and wireless chargers might be ideal.

Fold out sofa beds are also a great investment to allow overnight guests when you don’t have a spare bedroom, or a modular sofa that can configure differently depending on how many people you’re hosting, and allows people to socialise.

For smaller spaces, a sleek two-seater or statement armchair can provide comfort without overwhelming the room.

2. Embrace a fresh colour palette

Spring is synonymous with fresh, vibrant colours that signify light and renewal, so consider updating your lounge room’s colour scheme to reflect the season across your walls, accessories and décor.

How to do it:

A fresh coat: Opting for a clean and energising white palette on walls can instantly make the room feel bigger, while creating a versatile canvas you can easily refresh with décor and furnishings to suit the season. Pair this with soft pastels and nature-inspired hues to instantly breathe new life into your space.

Neutral colours and soft furnishings can create a sense of warmth and comfort in your lounge room.

Bring it together: Look for simple and affordable furnishings to pair with your sofa like cushions, throws and other home décor in complementary colours and textures to create a cohesive, inviting space.

Continue spring inside: Greenery and fresh blooms not only add a pop of colour to your home but can help improve air quality and create a relaxing atmosphere.

Bring in some zen with houseplants that thrive indoors, look great in a bright pot, and require minimal maintenance, like snake plants, spider plants, or cacti.

3. Create functional zones

As more people work from home or seek versatile living spaces, creating functional zones in your lounge room is essential.

Things to know:

A functional and stylish working from home space is a great way to zone your home.

Let your lifestyle guide you: Invest in pieces that support how you most like to use your lounge room, whether that’s a reading nook to unwind in, darker coloured fabric on your sofa to avoid stains from sticky hands, or a compact desk that converts to a WFH space.

Maximise space: Ottomans with storage, sofa beds, and modular lounges offer flexibility and practicality, making your lounge room adaptable to various needs and activities for your changing lifestyle.

4. Focus on lighting

Good lighting transforms a space, enhancing both functionality and ambiance.

And it doesn’t need to be hard to create – here are our tips:

Layer your lighting: Create a variety of adjustable lighting options for the mood and use of the space, like overhead fixtures with a floor lamp, or dimmers with a table lamp, that can provide ample illumination for different needs.

Let the sunshine in: Natural light is a significant asset in any home.

Over spring, maximise it by keeping windows unobstructed and using light, airy curtains to let the sun shine through.

Create light: Mirrors can help reflect light and create the illusion of a larger, brighter space. Position a decorative mirror opposite a window to amplify natural light and add depth to your new lounge space.

5. Add personal touches

Your lounge room should reflect your individual personality and style.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns and styles to achieve a harmonious blend that suits your taste – here’s how:

Your home should represent you, so adding your own style and taste reflects the personal nature of it.

Add interest and depth: Mix textures and materials to create a balanced and dynamic look – a velvet sofa with a rustic wooden coffee table, or a trendy stool alongside a gold side table.

Make it yours: Art, photographs, and mementos tell your story.

A gallery wall of family photos or a plush rug makes your lounge room feel uniquely yours and can easily be updated with your lifestyle over time.

So there you go; revamping your lounge room doesn’t need to be difficult, or even expensive.

By combining a few key investment pieces with simple and easily adaptable touches, anyone can create the perfect lounge room to welcome in spring – and every season after.
