Blair Imani: "Everything becomes a little bit simpler when we have a roadmap to get started.

1. Mutual respect comes first. If you can’t agree that all parties to the conversation are people with inherent rights, a conversation is difficult to move forward with.

2. Speak to share a message, not to change minds. Free yourself from the unnecessary pressure of seeking an unattainable goal.

3. Be present and listen with intention. Don’t wait for the person you’re communicating with to finish just so you can interject.

4. Set boundaries and respect boundaries. Which is easier to do if you have these conversations in moments of calm--not when everyone is upset.

5. Speak from your personal experience, not on behalf of others. Be open to reliable sources when discussing information that is not personal.

6. Be patient and remember, it’s a conversation, there’s nothing to win."
