Scarborough’s Bridging Festival links communities through the arts

Fifth annual event set for Lawrence Avenue bridge area between Galloway and Orton Park

Scarborough’s arts and cultural scene will be alive and visible during this year’s Bridging Festival on Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23.

Friday’s festivities will begin from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with an outdoor Variety Night at the East Scarborough Festival Market (4130 Lawrence Ave. East). The evening will feature musical and spoken word performances from emerging local artists.

Toronto filmmakers will also be showcasing a number of their short films, including the short film, FIVE DOLLARS, which premiered at last year’s TIFF Kids International Film Festival.

The Arts, Cultural and Environmental Festival begins on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The East Scarborough Storefront (4040 Lawrence Ave. East), under the Lawrence Avenue bridge, will be host to a variety of performances, music, vendors and free food.

The Saturday festival will also be filled with family-friendly activities, including a soccer drill workshop and an arts and crafts station.

The 5th annual Bridging Festival is an initiative by Scarborough Arts to “bridge the different communities of Scarborough” through the celebration of the arts.

Scarborough Arts is a local arts service organization (LASO) that supports innovative arts and cultural programs in partnership with the Scarborough community.

This year’s festival is one of Cultural Hotspot 2014’s signature events.

From May to October, the City of Toronto recognizes south Scarborough as part of a long history that actively contributes to the city’s arts and cultural diversity.
