On January 20, 1961, CBS aired the series debut of a game show. Hosted by legendary comedian Jackie Gleason, the format required four celebrity guests to put their heads through cut-outs in a giant tableau, and guess what scene they were in. It was called You're in the Picture. And it was perhaps the worst game-show flop of all time.

This is television. When a show performs poorly, the network yanks it off the air and hopes everyone forgets the whole thing. But Gleason -- who also had a hand in writing and producing the show -- did something that, in more than 60 years since, no other TV series has attempted.

He used the following week's time slot to apologize to viewers.

No tableau, no guests, not even a proper set. Gleason simply sat in a chair and addressed the live audience and the TV viewers for the full half-hour. "Last week, we did a show...that laid, without a doubt, the biggest bomb in history." He went on to call the previous week's episode "a catastrophe."

Continuing with the stated premise that "honesty is the best policy," Gleason explained how odd the entertainment industry is, and how much timing and luck play in a show's success. He used the example of the then-recent film Marty, about "an ugly butcher in the Bronx who can't get a date" -- which went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. He compared that to the Broadway musical Keep Off the Grass, which had all the elements of a hit in terms of writers and stars (including Gleason himself), but which closed after just 44 performances.

Gleason said that when the You're in the Picture producer first pitched the idea to him and his team, "we were hilarious. And it got contagious. We were calling in stenographers and secretaries -- 'hey, look at this!' You can't imagine how this built up, in our opinion, as a great show."

Finally, Gleason took full responsibility for You're in the Picture and pledged to be back next week with a different format, which turned out to be The Jackie Gleason Show, a talk show.

Despite, or maybe because of, its dreadful single episode, You're in the Picture stands as a unique moment of honesty and transparency in television. It shows that even a flop can be addressed with grace, wit, and humility, so stars shouldn't be afraid to face their failures head-on. Doing so can earn them respect and sympathy from viewers. Certainly Gleason deserves it, for taking his licks in front of a live audience.
