In a game that nearly turned into a classic March Madness shocker, the Duke Blue Devils held off a relentless challenge from the Siena Saints, escaping with a 71–65 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

From the opening tip, Siena made it clear they weren’t intimidated by Duke’s No. 1 seed status. The Saints came out aggressive, attacking the rim and playing physical defense that disrupted Duke’s offensive rhythm early. What was expected to be a comfortable game for the Blue Devils quickly turned into a gritty, back-and-forth contest.

Duke responded with its trademark composure

Using their size and depth, the Blue Devils began to settle in midway through the first half, finding scoring opportunities inside while knocking down key perimeter shots. Still, Siena refused to back down, matching Duke’s intensity possession after possession and heading into halftime within striking distance.

The second half brought even more drama.

Siena’s defense continued to apply pressure, forcing turnovers and converting them into points that kept the game tight deep into the final minutes. With under five minutes remaining, the Saints had cut the deficit to just two points, putting real pressure on one of college basketball’s most storied programs.

But championship-level teams respond—and Duke did just that!

A clutch three-pointer followed by a key defensive stop gave the Blue Devils breathing room late. From there, Duke controlled the final possessions, knocking down free throws and shutting the door on Siena’s upset hopes.

“We knew they were going to fight,” a Duke player said after the game. “In March, nothing comes easy. We just had to stay together and execute.”

Siena’s effort did not go unnoticed. The Saints showcased heart, toughness, and resilience, proving they belonged on the same stage despite the seeding gap.

For Duke, the win keeps their championship aspirations alive, but it also serves as a wake-up call. As the tournament continues, the margin for error only gets smaller—and performances like this remind everyone that in March, no lead is safe and no opponent can be overlooked.
