CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The scoreboard told the story Saturday night at Scott Stadium, but for NC State, the 34-8 loss to Virginia told an even bigger one.

The Wolfpack entered Charlottesville looking to start the 2026 season on a strong note. Instead, they found themselves chasing Virginia for most of the afternoon, struggling to establish an offensive rhythm while giving up too much ground on the defensive side of the football.

NC State finished with just 168 total yards, including 92 through the air and 76 on the ground. Virginia, meanwhile, piled up 413 total yards, controlling the tempo and keeping the Wolfpack defense on the field for much of the afternoon.

For NC State, the season opener was a reminder that there is plenty to clean up — but also plenty of football left to play.

Bailey's Legs Provide a Spark

Quarterback CJ Bailey was unable to consistently get the Wolfpack offense moving through the air, completing 12 of 23 passes for 84 yards with an interception.

But Bailey's ability to make plays with his legs provided one of the few consistent sparks for NC State.

The junior quarterback rushed for 33 yards on 10 carries, leading the Wolfpack in rushing.

Virginia's defensive pressure made life difficult for Bailey throughout the afternoon. The Cavaliers recorded two sacks and consistently forced NC State into difficult down-and-distance situations.

For the Wolfpack to move forward, getting Bailey into a rhythm will be critical.

That may begin with taking some pressure off him.

A stronger running game, more manageable third downs and opportunities for quick completions could allow Bailey to settle in and utilize the athleticism that makes him such an intriguing piece of NC State's offense.

NC State's Ground Game Never Found Its Footing

The Wolfpack's inability to establish the run was one of the afternoon's biggest problems.

NC State managed only 76 rushing yards on 24 attempts, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry.

Jayden "Duke" Scott finished with 20 yards on seven carries, while Will Wilson rushed for 21 yards on six attempts.

There were flashes, but not enough consistency to force Virginia to respect the ground game.

And when the running game struggles, everything becomes more difficult.

Virginia was able to put additional pressure on Bailey, crowd the passing lanes and play aggressively against NC State's offense.

The Wolfpack will need to find a way to create more running room moving forward. Whether that comes from improved blocking, better execution in the backfield or simply finding the right combination of backs, NC State cannot afford to become one-dimensional.

Wilson Provides a Much-Needed Moment

NC State's best offensive sequence came in the third quarter.

Trailing 24-0, the Wolfpack put together a nine-play, 60-yard drive that finally produced points.

Wilson finished the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, giving NC State its first score of the season.

The Wolfpack followed the touchdown with a successful two-point conversion, cutting Virginia's advantage to 24-8.

For a brief moment, momentum appeared to be shifting.

But Virginia quickly regained control.

Still, that drive provided a glimpse of what NC State's offense can look like when it establishes tempo, stays on schedule and creates opportunities for its playmakers.

The Wolfpack simply need more of those moments.

Defense Couldn't Contain Virginia's Ground Attack

If the offense struggled to find its identity, the defense faced an equally difficult challenge.

Virginia rushed for 258 yards on 57 carries, averaging 4.5 yards per attempt.

The Cavaliers were led by quarterback Beau Pribula, who repeatedly hurt NC State with his legs. Pribula rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries, adding another dimension to Virginia's offensive attack.

Jekail Middlebrook added 64 rushing yards, while Xavier Brown contributed 40 yards and a rushing touchdown.

NC State's defense simply could not consistently win the line of scrimmage.

The Cavaliers' rushing success also opened opportunities in the passing game.

Pribula completed only nine passes, but those completions proved costly. He finished with 155 passing yards and two touchdowns, including touchdown strikes of 45 and 47 yards.

Virginia's ability to run the football while taking shots downfield kept the Wolfpack defense off balance.

There Were Defensive Bright Spots

The final score shouldn't overshadow every positive from the Wolfpack defense.

NC State recorded a sack from Harvey Dyson III and forced a Virginia fumble.

The defense also held Virginia to just 4-of-14 on third down, showing an ability to make stops in critical situations.

The problem was consistency.

Too many long drives and explosive plays allowed Virginia to dictate the game.

NC State's defense will need to improve its tackling, gap discipline and ability to contain mobile quarterbacks. If those issues are corrected, there is enough talent on the defensive side to give the Wolfpack opportunities in future games.

The Biggest Question: Who Is NC State?

One game does not define a football team.

But one game can reveal what needs to change.

For NC State, the answer is clear.

The offense needs to become more balanced. The Wolfpack need to run the football more effectively, protect Bailey and find ways to generate explosive plays.

Defensively, the Wolfpack have to become tougher against the run and find answers when opposing quarterbacks create plays outside the pocket.

There are players to build around.

Bailey's athleticism gives NC State a quarterback capable of making plays. Wilson showed he can contribute in the running game, while Scott provides another option in the backfield.

Defensively, Dyson and the Wolfpack's front have the ability to create pressure. The challenge is turning those individual flashes into four quarters of consistent football.

A Loss That Can Become a Lesson

The trip to Charlottesville wasn't the start NC State wanted.

The Wolfpack were outgained, struggled to sustain drives and found themselves unable to slow down Virginia's rushing attack.

But the season is only beginning.

The value of an opening-game loss comes from what a team does afterward.

NC State now has film, answers and a long list of things to correct.

The Wolfpack don't need to forget what happened at Scott Stadium.

They need to learn from it.

Because if NC State can find its offensive identity, establish the run, protect Bailey and become more disciplined defensively, Saturday's disappointing opener can become something more valuable than just a loss.

It can become the game that forced the Wolfpack to figure out who they want to be.
