The Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball are one step closer to capturing the Atlantic Coast Conference title after a commanding semifinal victory over the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball in the 2026 ACC Tournament.

Virginia delivered a dominant performance Friday night, defeating Miami 84–62 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte to secure a spot in the ACC Championship game. The Cavaliers showcased their trademark defensive intensity and balanced scoring attack, proving why they are among the nation’s top teams as March Madness approaches.

From the opening tip, Virginia’s defense set the tone. Although both teams struggled early offensively, the Cavaliers broke the game open with a decisive run late in the first half, building a double-digit lead that Miami never recovered from. Virginia carried a 38–23 advantage into halftime and continued to extend the lead throughout the second half.

Virginia’s offense was fueled by a balanced effort across the roster. Ugonna Onyenso led the way with 17 points and four blocks, dominating inside and anchoring the Cavaliers’ defense. Teammates Thijs De Ridder and Sam Lewis added 16 points each, while Malik Thomas chipped in 15 points to help Virginia pull away late in the game.

The Cavaliers shot over 50 percent from the field and controlled the glass, out-rebounding Miami and forcing difficult shots from beyond the arc. Miami struggled offensively, shooting under 40 percent from the field and hitting just four three-pointers, as Virginia’s defense consistently disrupted the Hurricanes’ rhythm.

The win improves Virginia’s record to 29–4 in the first season under head coach Ryan Odom and marks the program’s 11th appearance in the ACC Tournament championship game.

Now, the Cavaliers stand just one victory away from claiming their fourth ACC Tournament title. Standing in their way is the conference’s top seed, the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball, who advanced to the final after defeating Clemson in the other semifinal.

With momentum on their side and a defense that has powered them all tournament long, Virginia has positioned itself as a legitimate contender to leave Charlotte as ACC champions.

For the Cavaliers, the message is clear: one more win and the championship is theirs.
