There’s something special happening in Richmond and it’s wearing Maroon and Grey!

Under the electric leadership of Jay Butler, Virginia Union University men’s basketball didn’t just win games this season—they made a statement. Night after night, the Panthers brought energy, grit, and just the right amount of swagger, finishing with a dominant 25–6 record and punching their ticket to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

And now? Butler’s brilliance is getting the national spotlight it deserves.

Named the 2026 National Association of Basketball Coaches Atlantic Region Co-Coach of the Year, Butler shares the honor with the head coach of Gannon University—but make no mistake, what he built at Virginia Union this season was something entirely his own.

This wasn’t just a good team—it was a dangerous one!

The Panthers thrived in the biggest moments. Close game? They leaned in. Hostile crowd? They silenced it. With every defensive stop and clutch bucket, Virginia Union built a reputation as a team you simply didn’t want to face late in the game. They didn’t panic—they performed.

That confidence starts at the top!

Butler brought a fearless mentality to the sidelines, empowering his players to trust their instincts while staying locked into the system. The result? A team that played fast, defended hard, and celebrated every big play like it was March Madness.

And when March did arrive, the Panthers were ready.

Their journey to the national stage wasn’t just about wins it was about identity. Tough. Together. Unshakeable. Butler didn’t just coach a team; he built a culture, one that turned belief into results and effort into excellence.

The recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches is well-earned, but for those who watched this team all season, it’s no surprise. Virginia Union didn’t sneak up on anyone they announced themselves.

Now, the rest of Division II is officially on notice.

Because with Jay Butler leading the charge, the Panthers aren’t just chasing greatness anymore…

They’re bringing it with them.
