Officials said five people have died and five more were injured after an Amazon cargo flight overran the runway at Miami International Airport and crashed after landing there in the afternoon.

"We can confirm that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today," Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in an email. "This is a fast-moving situation and we're still gathering details. We're working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened. Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We're doing everything we can to support those affected."

Officials announced the deaths during a televised press conference.

An earlier post on X by the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said units were on the scene of an incident involving a plane that overran the runway and struck multiple vehicles near the airport. The plane had caught fire because of the crash, the post said.

Miami International Airport's own X account identified it as Prime Air Flight 7598 and said the aircraft was disabled at the northwest end of the airport. Runways and taxiways were closed as of an hour ago, with a full ground stop in effect.

The FAA said the flight originated from Luis Munoz Marin International in Puerto Rico. The agency's website now says Miami flights are delayed through 3:59 a.m. Tuesday.

FlightAware, the flight tracking website, says 159 outbound flights have been delayed, and 52 have been canceled, while 119 inbound flights are delayed and 41 have been canceled.
