First it was released on an anonymous Soundcloud account, along with two other songs. Then, it became one of the latest viral sounds on TikTok. And finally, it's available on music streaming services for the masses: SZA's latest single, "I Hate U."

The track is in line with the rest of her catalog, which has been described as everything from neo soul to alternative R&B. Her vocals on the chorus are more ethereal, while in the verses she skews closer to traditional R&B delivery with some clear hip hop influences. "I Hate U" is her first solo release since "Good Days," which dropped on Christmas Day last year.

SZA, who is a Maplewood native, first posted "I Hate U" — along with "Joni" and "Nightbird" — on Soundcloud in August. In her tweet announcing the official release of the single, she described it as an "experiment." Devoted fans found it there, but in mid-November the song took it's next leap.

"Lol I heard tiktok found out ab “I hate you” today," she tweeted in November. It's not hard to understand why it took hold on the short-form video platform (though some replies don't know why it took so long). The line from the chorus "And if you wondered if I hate you," which is followed by a softer reply of "I do," is tailor-made for TikToks. One user's post of the sound has been used in almost 600,000 separate videos.

One of the most popular posts is just user @bretmanrock reacting to the chorus.

But others have used the clip to react to everything from cyclists on the road like user @janemckennan0 —

— to the point of view of their dog not getting a puppachino from Starbucks like user @alwaysjalen —

— to disputes between BFs and BFFs like user @2021popprincess.

SZA is likely hoping for the same reception for "I Hate U" as "Good Days." It charted as her first top-10 hit as a solo artist, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track is also nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B song.

That's not her only Grammy nomination this year, as her feature on Doja Cat's hit single "Kiss Me More," which has a massive TikTok following of its own, is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo Performance.

SZA has been nominated for 14 Grammys without winning, tied for 10th-most all-time. Her previous album, Ctrl, released in 2017, went platinum and secured her four nominations, including for Best New Artist. It also debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

As of this writing, there is no word on the release of a full album that "I Hate U," "Good Days" and another 2020 single, "Hit Different," would theoretically be on.
